1977 – Reba McEntire makes her first appearance on the Grand Ole Opry, singing the Patsy Cline classic “Sweet Dreams” and Roger Miller’s “Invitation To The Blues,” 30 years to the day after her father won his first rodeo honour.
1998 – Terri Clark had her shoulder dislocated when she was pulled from a moving car at the New Mexico State Fair. A male fan had pulled her from the open car

2005 – Brooks & Dunn’s “Play Something Country” appears at the top of the Billboard. Released on June 6, by Arista Nashville the song written by Ronnie Dunn and Terry McBride was the first single from the duo’s 2005 album HILLBILLY DELUXE. It was the twentieth Number One hit of the duo’s career.

Terri Clark & Greg Kaczor
2005 – Terri Clark married her tour manager Greg Kaczor on September 17. This was Terri’s second marriage. The couple’s wedding was documented on In the Moment, a TV series broadcast on CMT in December 2005.
Sadly on February 16, 2007 they filed for divorce today in Nashville. The couple had known each other for 10 years and were married just 17 months ago. Kaczor had formerly served as Terri’s tour manager but did not continue in that role following the announcement.

2009 – Buddy Miller wins four times during the Americana Music Association Awards & Honors at the Ryman Auditorium in Nashville chart

Hank Williams (1923), born in Mount Olive, Alabama. He becomes country music’s most influential singer-songwriter, while establishing a tragic legacy of alcoholism and death at age 29 on January 1, 1953. He joins the Country Music Hall of Fame in its first induction in 1961.

1971 – Tom T. Hall checks in at #1 on the Billboard country singles chart with “The Year That Clayton Delaney Died”. Released by Mercury on July 5, 1971 the self-penned song was the only single from the album, IN SEARCH OF A SONG and Tom T’s second number one on the country chart.
1993 – Garth Brooks rises to #1 on the Billboard country chart with “Ain’t Going Down (Til The Sun Comes Up)” . Released July 26, 1993 by Liberty the song written by Kent Blazy, Kim Williams and GarthBrooks

1999 – Kenny Chesney croons his way to #1 on the Billboard country chart with “You Had Me From Hello” Released by BNA on April 19, 1999 the song written by Kenny Chesney and Skip Ewing was the second single from Chesney’s album, EVERYWHERE WE GO
2004 – “Days Go By” takes Keith Urban to the top of the Billboard country chart. Released by Capitol on 29 June 2004 the song written by Monty Powell and Keith Urban was the lead-off single for his BE HERE album
2008 – Alison Krauss & Robert Plant win two trophies–Duo/Group of the Year and Album of the Year, for “Raising Sand”–during the seventh annual Americana Honors & Awards at Nashville’s Ryman Auditorium

1970 – Ray Price nets a #1 Billboard country single with “For The Good Times,” written by Kris Kristofferson
It was Price’s fifth #1 single and spent a total of nineteen weeks on the country chart
1973 – Gram Parsons dies at Joshua Tree, California, of an accidental chemical overdose. A former member of The Byrds, one of country-rock’s seminal acts, Parsons influenced Emmylou Harris to take up country music
1981 – Mickey Gilley’s remake of “You Don’t Know Me” hits #1 on the Billboard country chart. The song was written by Cindy Walker and Eddy Arnold in 1955. The song also became the twelfth number one country hit for Mickey Gilley. >> YouTube Audio
1998 – Eddie Rabbitt, Kent Robbins (“Straight Tequila Night”) and Merle Kilgore (“Ring Of Fire”) are inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame, during ceremonies at the Loews Vanderbilt Plaza Hotel in Nashville
2003 – One week after his death, Johnny Cash wins three trophies at the Americana Music Awards in Nashville

Trisha Yearwood (1964), born in Monticello, Georgia. A powerful vocalist in the vein of her idol Linda Ronstadt, she wins a Grammy for her 1997 recording of “How Do I Live” and becomes one of the most revered country acts of the 1990s

Death
Red Foley (1968), country singer (Mr Smith Goes to Washington), dies at 58. Born Clyde Julian Foley on June 17, 1910 the singer, musician, and radio and TV personality made a major contribution to the growth of country music after World War II. For more than two decades, Foley was one of the biggest stars of the genre, selling more than 25 million records. His 1951 hit, “Peace in the Valley”, was among the first million-selling gospel records. Foley suffered respiratory failure and died in his sleep, prompting Hank Williams, Jr. to write and record (as Luke the Drifter, Jr.) “I Was With Red Foley (The Night He Passed Away)
Slim Dusty (2003), (13 June 1927—19 September 2003) born David Gordon Kirkpatrick, “Slim Dusty “AO, MBE was an Australian country music singer-songwriter and producer, with a career spanning nearly seven decades. Dusty died at his home in St Ives, New South Wales, on 19 September 2003 at the age of 76 after a protracted battle with cancer. Thousands gathered at St. Andrew’s Cathedral, Sydney, on 26 September 2003 at a state funeral attended by the prime minister and the opposition leader.

The telethon raised $150 million in pledges to benefit families of the WorldTradeCenter and Pentagon attacks that occurred on September 11, 2001. The pledges were made from September 21 through September 24, 2001.

2002 – Darryl Worley picks up his first #1 single in Billboard: “I Miss My Friend”. This title album cut was released on March 11, 2002 by DreamWorks Nashville and was written by Tom Shapiro, Mark Nesler and Tony Martin.

Dickey Lee (1941), born in Memphis. After a 1962 pop hit with “Patches,” he notches such ’70s country hits as “Rocky” and “9,999,999 Tears,” and writes “She Thinks I Still Care,” “Let’s Fall To Pieces Together” and “I’ve Been Around Enough To Know
Mark Wright (1957), Songwriter-producer born in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He writes “Today My World Slipped Away” and “Take A Little Trip,” while producing hits for Lee Ann Womack, Clint Black, Mark Chesnutt, Brooks & Dunn and Trisha Yearwood
Faith Hill (1967), born in Jackson, Mississippi. Following her 1993 debut “Wild One,” she becomes one of country’s most successful female singers, gaining major crossover hits with “This Kiss” and “Breathe”
Ronna Reeves (1966), born in Big Spring, Texas. Between 1990 and 1998, she released five studio albums, including three on Mercury Records; she has also charted five singles on the Hot Country Songs charts. Her highest-charting single was “The More I Learn (The Less I Understand About Love)”, which reached number 49 in 1992

1979 – “Just Good Ol’ Boys” hits #1 in Billboard for duet partners Moe Bandy & Joe Stampley.
Released in July 1979 by Columbia it was written by Ansley Fleetwood. This novelty single stayed at number one for one week and spent a total of eleven weeks on the country chart
1999 – Dolly Parton, Johnny Bond and Conway Twitty were inducted into the Country Music Hall of Fame.
1999 – The 33rd Annual CMA Awards took place in Nashville. The Winners were:
Song of the Year – “This Kiss” – Robin Lerner, Annie Roboff, Beth Nielsen Chapman

2007 – Rascal Flatts’ “Take Me There,”
Written by Kenny Chesney, ascends to #1 in the Billboard country singles chart.
Released August 17, 2007 by Lyric Street it was penned by Kenny Chesney with Wendell Mobley and Neil Thrasher and was the first single from Rascal Flatts album STILL FEELS GOOD.
The song became their eighth number-one hit.

1989 – Rodney Crowell goes to #1 on the Billboard country chart with a remake of Buck Owens’ “Above And Beyond” Written by Harlan Howard Owens’ rendition reached #3 on the Billboard country singles charts. Rodney Crowell recorded a cover version on his album DIAMONDS & DIRT.

O B McClinton (1987), US country singer (Man needs a woman), dies at 47. Obie born April 25, 1940 in Senatobia, Mississippi, died September 23, 1987 after a year-long battle with abdominal cancer. He was a Black country music singer and songwriter.
