…..He is gifted with superlative musical talent, and he could have had a brilliant career as a concert pianist..But his devotion to Christ and a call to the ministry were the top priorities in his life.
…..The dilemma hit him in his teens. ” Should I become a preaching piano player, or a piano-playing preacher” he asked himself.
…. Voices in favor of his music bombarded him. He struggled and went to his knees. His decision was as clear as his faith was firm: God first- he would be a piano-playing preacher. That decision led him to seminary, marriage, children and then over 20 years on the mission field.
…. His recent e-mail came as a shock. “The tumor in my leg is malignant. I need an amputation above the knee, and there is a possibility it has metastasized to my lungs. I’m so glad I don’t have to worry about the outcome. It’s heaven anyway, whether I arrive earlier or later. My life is in the Lord’s hands. Please pray.”
…. My daughter hadn’t opened the piano for years. For the past weeks she’s been shakily pecking out “Greensleeves.” “It’s the first piece he taught me, she said” “I am playing it as I pray, remembering him before God.” As I hear the notes, I hum the tune and join my heart with hers.
….Without his leg, his fingers continue to fly across the keyboard, up-lifting hearts with consecrated music. One thing is sure: He will always be praising the Lord, now and through all eternity.
