Rhon’s Inspiration Station In A Spirit Of Affection
“LORD HELP ME TO DO MY WORK WITH A SPIRIT OF AFFECTION, NOT DREAD”
AUTHOR: DANIEL SCHANTZ
Believe it or not, when my wife hands me a list of “HONEY DO” chores I do them immediately.
It wasn’t always that way. Early in our marriage she had to trick me into doing these jobs by pretending to be helpless. I caught her trying to fix a wooden recipe box, using her high-heeled shoe as a hammer. Both the box and the shoe showed signs of severe trauma. “Here Iet me do that. A high heeled shoe is not a hammer!”
One day I came home to find the house dark and Sharon nowhere in sight. I finally found her in the living room, sprawled out on the floor with the heavy picture lying on her head. I was actually fooled for a while until she started giggling. I rehung the picture right away.
Then there was the big, heavy framed picture that hung over the living couch. It had pulled loose from its anchor. “Danny, you need to fix that picture or it will fall on one of our guests and hurt someone .” I re hung the picture right away.
In Mid marriage, it occurred to me that these undone chores were some source of great angst to her that she would stoop to such tricks. I don’t like to see Sharon suffer. She has enough problems with her bad knee and terrible eyesight. So I changed my motivation from grudging duty to a expression of love for her, and that made all the difference.
I’m no hero, just slow to mature. We both win when Sharon is happy plus I get a lot of good exercise doing those tasks.
I have since discovered that most of my duties in life can be made easier with love.
