Bradford Files: Reevvveeerrrrrbbbb Or No Reverb
I can’t begin to tell you how many times we spent countless hours mixing someone’s album to have them turn around and say, “Can you put a little more reverb on my voice?” For some reason the Indie artist I work with are convinced that the more reverb you put on their vocal the better it sounds. I don’t know if this is a direct result of singing in one too many Karaoke bars where the reverb is on stun or what. I know for a fact that 99% of the new music coming out of Music Row here in Nashville, TN has little or no reverb on the lead vocal. The clarity of an artist voice without all those effects is refreshing to hear and I am all in favor of it. You can pour perfume on a pig and it is still a pig. You can add tons of reverb to a bad vocal and instead of making it sound better you make the bad vocal sound worse. We are in the service business and will continue making the customer happy by adding all the reverb they can handle. I laugh when radio refuses to play their recordings however. Funny thing is they will never ever admit it is because there is so much reverb on the vocal that no one can understand the words.
