In Need This morning during the Christmas Season
Blessed are those who mourn for they shall be comforted Matthew 5:4
Author Oscar Green: Christmas Eve is one of the busiest days of the year. There’s last minute gift shopping, food to be purchased and prepared and, of course, the evening church service to attend. But this Christmas Eve I had another concern. It was about my doctor. My doctor is always helpful. He continues to make house calls, and he visits the sick in nursing homes. He loves medicine and his patients. And in addition to being my doctor, he’s my friend.
Just before Christmas, the doctor’s young wife died. Her funeral was to be held on Christmas Eve, I was afraid that because of the day, only a scattering of people would be able to attend. I was wrong, The church was overflowing . The doctor’s mentor, a monk as well as a medical doctor, was in the sanctuary, robed to take part in the service. I felt sad, but my heart was warmed because the community and the doctor’s patients were there to support and to comfort him.
During the service I wondered what I could do to help. There seemed no answer. But as I was leaving the church I heard a lady whisper, “I feel so sad saying goodbye to this young lady whose wife was cut too short. There’s nothing we can do for her. But we can do everything for the doctor and his 4 children.” I had my answer. When the doctor and his family felt alone, I would be there for them.
Understanding Lord, reaching out to comfort is the gift You gave us two thousand years ago.
