Golden Rule not so golden: The Golden rule that I was taught in Sunday school is not quite so golden these days. Just about everyone knows it’s definition by heart but for those not familiar with the phrase it is: “One should treat others as one would like others to treat oneself.”  

Somehow this positive way of thinking has gotten mixed up with a direct opposite way of life often referred to as Dog-eat-dog.  By definition this phrase describes a situation in which people will do anything to be successful, even if what they do harms other people. 

Thus you often hear “It’s a dog-eat-dog world out there.”  It sounds gruesome but is a part of today’s society on many levels.  Someone painted a very clear picture to describe it by saying it is like a bucket full of live crabs. 

They are all trying to get out of the bucket and will step on each other, push the other ones, and claw at each other in a desperate attempt to get out of the bucket.  The old saying about you better watch who you step on while climbing up the ladder because you might see them again on your way down is as true today as when the little saying was first uttered. 

Just think what it would be like to be in a world where everyone lived by the Golden Rule.  Christians believe there is such a place.  Scientists say it doesn’t exist.
