South African Fracking Activist Wins International Prize

Johnathan Deal has previously written about fracking in South Africa for Green.24 here. This year’s other Goldman Prize winners hail from Iraq, Italy, Indonesia, Columbia and the USA.

Jonathan Deal, the South African grassroots anti-fracking activist and founder of the non-profit Treasure Karoo Action Group has been awarded the prestigious Goldman Environmental Prize for 2013.

Deal and the five other recipients of this year’s prize will each receive $150 000 (approximately R1.4m) to use in their endeavours to protect the environment.

Founded by US philanthropists Richard N. and Rhoda H. Goldman in 1989, the Goldman Environmental Prize is awarded annually to recognise and support the work of grassroots environmental activists around the world.
