PHILIPPINES 3RD DEADLIEST COUNTRY FOR JOURNALISTS A recent report by international watchdog Committee to Protect Journalists lists the Philippines as the third deadliest country for journalists in the world. A Tuesday, May 6, 2014 radio report says that on Sunday night a radio station manager and broadcast journalist was gunned down in an ambush in Bongao town in Tawi-Tawi province. Bombo Radyo reports on Tuesday: The victim initially identified as Richard Nadjid died before he could be brought to a hospital. The same report says: Nadjid was acting manager of DXNN PowerMix FM in Bongao. Known as DJ Troy, Richard Nadjid is also a reporter on DXGD-549 in Jolo before he relocates to DXNN FM (PowerMix 92.5) in Tawi-Tawi. Two men on a motorcycle shoot Nadjid around 7:30 pm Sunday on his way home after a basketball game in Barangay Tubig Boh.

HOUSTON, TX SPORTS WRITER EATS HIS WORDS Houston Chronicle sportswriter John McClain loses his bet that the Texans will select a quarterback in the first round of the 2014 NFL Draft and he eats those words, literally. Instead of a quarterback, the Houston Texans choose defensive end Jadeveon Clowney. A report by USA Today “For the Win” columnist Laken Litman mentions that McClain has someone film him in the cafeteria as he eats his newspaper’s Draft Day front page. On the advice of his doctor, McClain consumes the print in “Chronicle strip”-size portions over the course of an afternoon and evening, with a little tuna added for flavoring. During the video, Chronicle sportswriter John McClain jokes that a new diet plan could very well involve eating the paper on a daily basis.

REPORTER FIRED DUE TO BLOG COMMENT WAAY TV ABC CH 31 in Huntsville, AL fires special investigations reporter Shea Allen because of what she posts in her personal blog. Allen says that she posts the blog, Confessions of a Red-Headed Reporter, on Tuesday night. The Huntsville Times reports that the blog post in which she claims to have gone bra-less during on-air appearances draws national attention. The blog lists 10 confessions about her job: I hope it makes you laugh. Among the items: I’ve gone bra-less during a live broadcast and no one was the wiser, My best sources are the ones who secretly have a crush on me and If you ramble and I deem you unnecessary for my story, I’ll stop recording but let you think otherwise. The freedom of speech here in America takes a nose dive.

TALK HOST SAYS GOOD-BYE TO RADIO Bud Brown, WILK-980 Wilkes-Barre, PA broadcasting legend in northeastern Pennsylvania, signs off the air for the last time. WILK-980’s Bud Brown retires after more than 40 years of radio airwork. Brown admits that he has difficulty with the changes in broadcasting over the years: For the first time in my life, I felt a disconnect not only from the business but from my coworkers. Bud and his wife relocate to Arizona. His plans include part time but he says that he will miss full time radio: Writing the news and then going on the air because they are the two things that I really did derive pleasure from, as far as radio. WILK-980’s John Webster says: He really is a legend in northeast Pennsylvania in radio and in news and in writing, a force of nature really.

DAVE MICHAELS (Dayton-Huber Heights, OH) Subject: Funny Story – KBUC. One morning ( 1980 ) Judd Ashmore is doing the Morning show without “Ricci Ware ” so he comes out in the hall and motions me to come in the studio with him (he has 15 minutes left of the show); opens the Mic and says – our Newest member of the line up Mark Jon Holiday is in the studio with me. Mark tell us a little about yourself, where YOU came from – New to Texas, married -children, your general background buddy? Well for the so many minutes – Judd conducts a nice interview with me and ends the show. Ricci Ware would have NEVER done that – that was the difference between them. Mark Jon Holiday

GARY DUCK (Austin, TX) Subject: Late to the party. I only found your newsletter because I was trying to locate an old acquaintance and their name showed up in an email in your Christmas, 2008 newsletter. It was a discussion between John Hale and Ron Selden about DJ Jay Thomas aka John Teekle. This may have been settled in the ensuing five or six years but let me throw in my two cents worth. I am a native of Houston so I know that KFMK-FM was on the air well before KLOL-FM started. Teekle was working there sometime prior to 1970. I met him for the first time when he and his new bride (my ex-girlfriend) moved to Austin in the fall of 1969. He was working for what I think had changed call signs to KLBJ-FM from KTBC-FM. They were moving to the Album oriented rock format with a touch of the then-new “underground radio” playlist. I’m not sure how long he stayed here. It was probably only a couple of years at most. That may be when he went back to Houston to work at KLOL. Hope I may have filled in a few holes for anyone who cares. And if anyone does know where Mr. Teekle can be found, I would be interested to know. Thanks. Gary Duck; Austin, TX

TRIVIA ANSWER: R&B singer, Hank Ballard, writes and records Work With Me Annie but the FCC bans it from radio air play in 1954. On May 22, 1954 Work With Me Annie sails to the top of the R&B charts. We kids down South in Dallas, TX hear John R spin the tune on powerful flamethrower WLAC-1510 in Nashville, TN. In 1960, Hank is the first to record The Twist. Chubby Checker takes The Twist to #1 in both 1960 and 1961 and creates a worldwide dance craze called The Twist.
