Before we left home, Robert and I read to each other about Knossos, where King Minos’s palace had been partially restored by Sir Arthur Evans, a Victorian archeologist,  Now we stand in the throne room of that very palace, admiring the beauty of the wall paintings as  well as the throne itself.  But one structure we wonder about a rectangular enclosure opposite the King’s throne.  Our guide Vicky tells us it was once a pool of water used for purification ritual;.  Before the King’s subjects could have an audience with him. they had to enter into the water to be cleansed.

It made me think of the words of Psalm 51:7 in which ,  the Psalmist prays, “Wash me , and I will be whiter than snow.”  Our king is not named Minos, but He, too offers  a purification ritual.  I’s called the  forgiveness of sins. Jesus asks that I confess my sins, not for His sake but for mine.  When I bring to Him my unclean thoughts and unkind words, my unholy  actions and all the sinfulness in my  life, He gives me the most beautiful  I can receive- a clean heart, worthy to live in His healing presence.

Wash me, Lord, and I shall be whiter than snow – Marilyn Morgan King
