In April 2017, ESPN eliminates the positions of about 100 air personalities and journalists.

JOE FORD [ex KLDE FM, KNUZ-1230, KILT-610] (Spring-Houston, TX) Subject: Fats Domino. My dad had a great guy, whose name was Otis Evans. Otis worked for Pop and was the guy that introduced me to the wonderful world of the blues. I was 15 years old and was attempting to copy the licks of Jimmy Reed, Lightnin’ Hopkins, BB KIng, etc. on my old Kay electric guitar. Otis took me under his wing and taught me things a little white boy would never be able to learn in the sheltered world I lived in. He said, “I’m gonna give you an education kid. Tonight I takin’ you down to The Skylark to see Fats Domino.” We walked into the Skylark Lounge in Corpus Christi, Texas, and my life changed forever. On stage was a small, good looking young man, a bit overweight, pounding a well used baby grand and blowing the roof off the place. It was the first time I’d heard “Please Don’t Leave Me”- but not the last. Fats keyboard work mesmerized me and is still a rock n’ roll standard. Over the years, he became a friend and we would sit and talk about his career. He would play a couple of bars of one of his many million sellers and make me guess the title! I loved his music so I always got it right because I was such a huge fan. I could go on and on about this kind man who epitomized the heart and soul of his native New Orleans but I’ll just let his great catalogue of music speak for itself. RIP, Fat Man…you deserve the time off. Joe Ford

KAREN MASSEY [Duckie ex morning host on KITE-930, KXOL-1360, KBUC FM] (San Antonio, TX) Subject: KXOL Ft. Worth. Jim: What year was MIKE SHANNON at KXOL. There were some real nice guys that I worked with and have lost all contact. I would love to reconnect just to say Hi. I remember, my partner (Casey Jones) and I would talk about a club in town that we called the Stomach Pump. It was a lovely club, we just called it that. We had one jock, as cute as a little button that was a wonderful singer, I don’t remember his name. However, I would like to think he did something with his singing career. There was another chap with curly hair and again, I don’t remember his name. Would you mind putting a call out for those that worked at KXOL during 1973 or 4 thou 1976 I believe those were the years. As always, thank you. Your Radio Remembrance brings back some wonderful thoughts, especially when I see some names that I recognize or think I recognize. Hay, this old age is for the birds. Duckie ! JAY WEAVER [KLBK–1360 Lubbock; KBUY–1540 Fort Worth; Several Other Places] (DFW-Hurst, TX) In 1968, I worked at KPCN (730) for about one month. The details are that the manager at KBUY (1540), Roy Lemons fired me because he didn’t think I was knowledgeable enough about Country Music. I had been playing Top 40 and had never played Country. It was the only time I was ever “fired” in my radio career. One month later, KBUY called me and wanted me to come back. The main reason was because they couldn’t find anyone else who they were happy with, at least that’s what Bo Powell told me at the time. Bo was the one who told Mr. Lemons he had better get me back because the regulars were not going to work weekends and fill in. They were having no luck finding anyone else they were happy with, so Lemons agreed to ask me to comeback. That’s how I was told it happened. It ended up leading to a five year stint at KBUY. Jay
