SUNDAY NIGHT BASEBALL CLOBBERS NFL FOOTBALL It appears that NFL players and their National Anthem protests take a toll of their ratings. Sunday’s Game 5 of the World Series in Houston, TX KOs the NFL game between Pittsburgh Steelers and the Detroit Lions. The Astros’ 13-12 win takes the #1 spot for primetime over NBC’s typically dominant Sunday Night Football. If NFL game viewership drops, that means fewer viewers of NFL players who violate their national heritage.

WHEELER DEALERS LOSES CHINA One of our favorite reality TV shows, Velocity’s Wheeler Dealers, where car enthusiast Mike Brewer searches out sometimes Classic cars at reduced prices brings them to their auto repair shop. Auto restore expert Edd China brings the old cars back to new life in record time. Edd has an uncanny ability to diagnose and repair just about any car’s mechanical problems. We receive word that Edd China exits Wheeler Dealer after 13 years because Velocity chooses to reduce Edd’s time on the air. This is a drastic mistake!

JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ PD/DJ] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Fats Domino. I’m very saddened by Fats Domino’s death, but 89 is the ending of a great life. In 1954, I had just taken my girlfriend, now my wife Shirley, home from a date, and was driving home, listening to WLAC in Nashville, when Gene Nobles, the great late night show host, began playing a song that knocked my ears off…that song was “Rosa Lee, Come Back To Me”, and I immediately became a great Fats Domino fan. I loved everything he ever did….even “Walkin’ To New Orleans”, which was written by Bobby Guidry, who was a friend of mine during the years that he came thru Memphis and visited WHBQ, promoting his recordings and writings. When Shirley and I had moved to Memphis, and I worked at WHBQ, Fats was recording many more million sellers, and I told Shirley: “I don’t know if you like Fats Domino, but if he ever comes to Memphis to do a show, I’ll definitely go see him”. He did, I went, and so did Shirley. Now, rest in peace Antoine “Fats” Domino…I’ve got all your music and listen often. Jack Parnell—former WHBQ-Memphis jock/program director.

TOM FONTAINE [KILT FM DJ] (Houston-Dickinson, TX) Hey Jim!!! I am SO sorry it has taken me so long to respond to you! I am going back to school, taking tests and rebuilding my house! I am humbled at your kindness! Yes…That is the site…I can’t tell you how fast things went from “No worries” to knee deep water throughout the entire home, a snake swimming across my bedroom and wading out into waist deep water to a rescue boat…In my front yard! Maybe 2 hours! Hope you and Suzie are well! Thank you, Tom

MIKE MARSHALL [former DJ on KNOK-970, KBOX-1480, KFJZ-1270, AFN-BERLIN, WFAA-820/570, KPRC-950, KXYZ-1320, KULF-790, KQUE FM, KBME-790] (Houston, TX) Subject: WFAA. Jim, Tony Lawrence also mentioned the studios. The three control rooms were, except for the size of the room, identical. Each had the red button, which meant any one could connect to either the 570 or 820 transmitter. The engineers always wanted to do “maintenance” when I was working on Saturday afternoons. As far as I could tell it consisted of squirting Windex on the face of the VU meters and it took about two hours, which meant I had to move everything, records, carts, copy book, the log from the main control room to the production room and back again what seems like every Saturday. No other station came close to this level of periodic maintenance. Also, I’m still waiting to hear Tony’s story how he got into American Forces Radio as a draftee. In my case it was incredible luck and considerable clout from my congressman, Rep. Jim Wright from Fort Worth. Mike Marshall KNOK, KBOX, KFJZ, AFN, BERLIN, WFAA, KPRC, KXYZ, KULF, KQUE, KBME
