DUANE ALLEN [Lead singer Oak Ridge Boys] (Hendersonville, TN) Jim, At any given time, I might be mentoring up to a dozen or more writers, artists, and people who wish to get into the music business. I tell them to decide what is their best gift to push. Is it writing, publishing, singing, playing, or any other part of the music business. Work on your best talent and get it to the very best you can. I, also, caution people who want to write everything, play everything, sing every part, publish their own songs, etc. I tell them that their career will be limited to the weakest link in the chain I, also, tell them that 3-minutes of magic is the most important link in that chain. Every other link can be added if one starts with magic.

BETTY KIRKPATRICK [former girlfriend] (San Antonio, TX) Dear Jim, I can’t recall last Wednesday, calling that day, but anything is possible. My new smart Samsung note 8 phone may have tried to reach you on its own as it is very confusing to me and tries to help me all the time and says constantly “Just tell me what you want to do” to which I reply..”Just leave me alone and don’t help me but alas no matter what, it acts like my cousin Sara and does what it wants to do! I can’t believe I traded in the five for a nightmare phone…It keeps saying “I am Bixby” here to help and goodness knows I am ready to throw the dang thing over the neighbors fence. That is how much I treasure the neighbor!

TRIVIA ANSWER: On September 26, 1908 the first stereo advertisement for an Edison Phonograph appears in the Saturday Evening Post.

CHARLES GEORGE [kc5rai, ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) My parents had a joke about Useful and Fun gifts. Also about Birthday and UnBirthday Gifts from a story by Lewis Carroll. One year my mother goes to Waxahachie and buys bags of dirt and Fertilizer, and a potted plant, that she takes to a friend of theirs in Denton, this was for his Birthday. I thought what a strange gift. Anyway I think about a song done that I like by Lou Rawls, Down Here On The Ground. I also like his version of Soul Serenade though also like the version by a Saxophonist. 73, Charles, KC5RAI

THOMAS HUGHES (October 20, 1822 – March 22, 1896) Blessed are they who have the gift of making friends, for it is one of God’s best gifts.
