KEN DOWE [CEO Service Broadcasting #1 KKDA FM (104.5) / EVP McLendon Corp. #1 KLIF-1190] (Dallas, TX) Jim, I seem to remember that after Charlie and Ron left the morning show, there were a couple or more experimental “Charlie & Harrigans.” They were relatively short lived, so you are forgiven for not remembering. Gordon owned the C & H name, so he put whomever into either role. Unfortunately, no team could match the original. Ron and Jack were the sparkling stars. kd

MICHAEL O’SHEA [KLIF-1190 Dallas, TX/WLW-700/KMPC-1540 Los Angeles, CA] (Santa Rosa, CA) Subject: KLIF and KNUS-FM. Hi Jim…I was reading back issues of JRRR and having fun seeing the back and forth of the KLIF-KNUS-FM saga from the early 70’s. Ken Dowe’s recollection is spot-on (of course) as he was “on the spot” at the time. Gordon McLendon was a quiet, non-assuming individual, a true genius and a great businessman, but gentle in his own confidence and demeanor. I had a front-row-seat during this period as I was the current PD of KLIF (1190) when GBM sold the station. I recall the “big announcement” in the KLIF movie theatre on Commerce Street that Mike (Simpson) mentioned. Sincerely, Michael O’Shea; President, Sonoma Media Group; Santa Rosa, CA

In May 1924, 1000 watts. In January 1925, WLW-700 is first radio station with 5000 watts. On October 4, 1928, WLW-700 increases its power to 50 kilowatts and becomes the first radio station at this power level, which still is the maximum power currently allowed for any AM radio station in the United States.
