CBS RELOCATES PELLEY OFF EVENING NEWS Scott Pelley who anchors CBS Evening News since 2011 relinquishes that post to concentrate on his 60 Minutes anchor position. The wise owls at CBS figure it all out. According to insiders: the 60 Minutes position is prestigious enough that CBS does not have to deal with the p.r. headache of seeming to ‘demote’ one of its most high-profile talents. Sources tell us: Norah O’Donnell is a favorite candidate to become the sole female anchor of a major evening news program.

AT&T – TIME WARNER MERGER On Wednesday, December 7, 2016, key U.S. senators on both sides of the aisle put through the wringer AT&T and Time Warner executives about their proposed $85 billion merger. President-elect Trump stamps the deal as an example of the power structure I am fighting. AT&T and DirecTV already remove Newsmax TV on CH349. AT&T has 26 million pay TV wireless subscribers. AT&T owns DirecTV paid cable/satellite TV service. Time Warner is one of just six companies along with Viacom, CBS, ABC, Comcast-NBC and 21st Century Fox that control 90% network offerings . What is your opinion? Should AT&T and Time Warner be allowed to merger? Let us know.

MIKE SIMPSON [ex KLIF, KRLD-AM/FM/TV, WFAA-AM, KDSX-Sherman/Denison, KIKN-Corpus Christi, KVET-Austin, KFJZ/Texas State Network, and KVIL-FM 3 separate times] (Sacramento, CA) Subject: “My father and I are selling KLIF…” At age 66 now, I sadly have to reflect that (other than Frank Haley, who I see posting emails in Jim’s newsletter often) almost every one of those legendary news folks are not with us any longer. After all these years, I do have a confession to make that would probably have set management’s hair on fire had they known back then; so, Bill Stewart’s concern was that I wasn’t covered by station liability insurance for on air work. Wonder what he and Al Lurie (KLIF GM…who happened to live on my same street) would have done if they had known I didn’t even have a DRIVER’S LICENSE!!! Mike Simpson (ex KLIF, KRLD-AM/FM/TV, WFAA-AM, KDSX-Sherman/Denison, KIKN-Corpus Christi, KVET-Austin, KFJZ/Texas State Network, and KVIL-FM 3 separate times. KFA-905 Dallas, signing off!

JOANIE GREEN [KPRC TV CH 2, KZEW FM, KFWD FM, KNOK FM, KAUM FM, KILT FM, KNUZ-1230, Metro Traffic, Houston Taping for the Blind] (Tulsa, OK) Subject: Dates w/Stations. Hi Jim, I’m going to try to give some dates with the stations I worked at. KPRC-TV 1986-2002 (almost to 2003), KZEW 1973-75, KFWD 1975, KNOK 1976, KAUM 1976-78, KILT 1978-80, KNUZ 1981-91 (part-time on weekends), Metro Traffic/Houston Traffic Central 1981-86, Shadow Traffic (part-time) 1991-2008, Campus radio stations at SMU & NTSU from 1969-73. After I left Channel 2, I went to work at the University of Houston until 2008/9 in the media office. I volunteered at Houston Taping for the Blind (Now “Sight into Sound”) every week from 1991-2008, reading “Tales of Suspense” The Houston Chronicle and “Short Story Theater” and won an honorable mention for “Tales of Suspense” from the American Federation for the Blind. Houston Gridiron 1991-2008, Tulsa Gridiron 2014-Present. I found some interesting stuff. I have pics of KNUZ, the “KZEW Smokers” and old KILT Bumper sticker… Would you like me to scan those and email them to you? Joan

TRIVIA ANSWER: America’s only Sunday afternoon newspaper Westerly Sun in Westerly, RI is the only paper in America to report the Imperial Japanese Navy attack on Pearl Harbor into its regular Sunday edition. On Sunday, December 7, 1941, Publisher George B. Utter stops the presses to get the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor on the front page. While the attack occurs at 2:22 pm EST, the Sun reports it as 2:23 pm in its headline. With history altered by one minute, the Sun reports the story in its regular Sunday edition.

JIM MCCURDY [ex KORQ FM DJ, KTAB-TV news anchor] (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) In 2000 I was recruited to direct biz development for the Moody Foundation’s Transitional Learning Center (a post acute brain injury rehab facility) in Galveston and was there for 5 years. met my future wife there, and then was recruited to direct the clinical community partnerships for the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) on the island. Then Hurricane Ike hit, and in 2008. Tia and I along with about 4000 other UTMB employees lost our jobs due to the damage caused by the storm (over a billion $). So, we left the island and landed on our feet in Austin and both worked for the Seton Healthcare Family of Hospitals, I, in physician relations and physician recruitment, and Tia was Director of Volunteer Services for the University Medical Center Brackenridge (UMCB) the Level 1 Trauma Center here. I was then recruited by University Federal Credit Union (UFCU) to create and direct the business development department for medical outreach in the lending services departments. Been doing that for 4 years in November, and will retire at the end of this year and consult for them after that. So, it’s been an interesting career path for me and don’t think I’d change a thing if given the chance.
