CHINA SELLS PIRATE CDS The Wall Street Journal reports that even in this digital era, there are plenty of music fans who still purchase old-fashioned compact discs for more than $10 each. But, the money that shoppers spend on CDs lately doesn’t necessarily go to the artists and record labels who create the music. Pirates flood the market on Amazon.com, plus other online retailers, with counterfeit CDs from China. In August, 2016 Recording Industry Association of America finds out of 194 CDs delivered, 44 are fake.

MIKE KELLAM [KHFI FM/NBC/WMAQ-670] (Estes Park, CO) Hi, Jim! Very sorry to hear about Ricci Ware’s passing. I taught high school in San Antonio in 1965 and 1966, and, when not in the classroom, had KTSA on the radio all the time. I saw Ricci in action when at KTSA for a promotion for a school project. His style, at that time, reminded me of Bruce Morrow (Cousin Brucie) of WABC, whom I had seen in action in August of 1965. Ricci went on to become a legend in San Antonio and will surely be missed. After leaving San Antonio, I went to work at KHFI AM, FM, TV, and then got to listen to and work with Jim Rose! Wow, has it been that long? Time marches on! Love your column, Jim! Mike Kellam; Ex KHFI AM, FM, TV, Austin, Tx, WMAQ 670 AM, TV Ch. 5, WKFM. 103.5, Chicago.

MIKE MARSHALL [KFJZ-1270, KQUE FM, KULF-790] (Houston, TX) Subject: KULF. I’m sure Jim Shannon is referring to an earlier period at KULF than when I was there, probably just after they changed the call letters. I was hired by PD Bill Wamsley in mid 1974. He needed an all-night guy, which I really wasn’t interested in, but he assured me it was only until a daytime shift opened up. That never happened, (well, actually the shifts opened but he never gave one to me) so I left in June of 1976. When I started, the line up was Jim Tate, mornings, Jim Heath, Joe Bauer, Gary Ryder and me. I even had an all night newsman, Sam Putney. Imagine any station doing that these days. Robert Knowlton and Jim Guidry were on the news staff and Kay Henderson did traffic. Of those, I only know that Tate, Knowlton and Guidry are gone, Jim Guidry just recently. Mike Marshall

TRIVIA ANSWER: In June 1978 when radio executive David Rapaport visits New York’s Studio 54 discothèque, the huge crowd impresses him. David buys 200 disco records and takes them to Spanish-language WHOM FM (92.3). At 6 pm, July 24, 1978 WHOM FM flips to Disco-based Top 40 format as Disco 92. In Fall 1978, WHOM FM rises from Worst to First ejecting WABC-770 from its 18-30 demographic. By 1979, Disco music becomes top radio format all across America. KRLY FM (93.7) Houston, TX becomes #1 as Disco 94.

CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM-KC5RAI] (Dallas, TX) Subject: 93.1. I just heard several spots for businesses in Longview. So I think I am getting KTYL, Tyler. I just slightly moved my antenna and the station came up while others faded. Also a station with American Family Radio is drowning out KETR 88.9, I think it is Waco. Now if I could get some stations from Austin and Houston. I have heard stations in the past from Austin on 100.7, 93.7, 90.5. And have heard a station with Surf Music on 104.9 from Houston. Though they came in best around Christmas. 73, Charles, KC5RAI

CHARLIE DANIELS (October 28, 1936 – p) Trump is gonna take a heck of a pay cut.
