KEN DOWE [CEO #1 KKDA FM / EVP McLendon Corp. #1 KLIF-1190] (Dallas, TX/Santa Fe, NM) Jim, Bill (Ham) was reared in Waxahachie with our friend John Borders. They went to school together until Johnny left for Baylor on a basketball scholarship. Johnny and I were close from the time he was my boss at KLIF in 1964 Dallas. Since then we had been regular luncheon buddies and fellow commiserators on business and politics, during and after the years we each owned radio stations. I knew all his Waxahachie family, and all the friend-ties, and inter-connecting relationships. Like Bill and John’s 79 year friendship. Their entire lives. Last Christmas Dottie and I received our usual gift of a box of cracked pecans from Bill at his “Lone Wolf” ranch near Austin. In early April I sadly attended Johnny’s funeral in Dallas after he died suddenly of pancreatic cancer. Bill was there. I sent Bill an email yesterday, but it had bounced back this morning. Chuck Dunaway emailed me the sad news. Now, it’s late in June. And, another too soon funeral. As friend Claude Hall says, “We come. We go.” Bill was such a wonderful fellow, and an unusually polite and respectful guy. Ken

CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KILT-610, KLIF-1190] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: This was a tragic story. He (Bill Ham) never married again. Very sad. Keep your Glock locked and loaded~ I don’t know that Bill ever truly recovered. Cecile was the High School beauty queen in Waxahachie when Bill “was not cool enough or good enough” for her and her “Good ” family… (believe her dad was FBI) vs Bill’s modest background. Cecile married the “cool” guy, moved to NYC, and the marriage failed. By the time she returned…Ta Da! Bill was famous…and rich. ZZ TOP was his gold mine. He was deliriously overjoyed when Cecile agreed to become his wife. Bill loved buying her anything she wanted. He bought her the most expensive Cadillac available. She was ecstatic. Deciding to use it to run up to the supermarket, she finished shopping and ran back to her new car…where she was suddenly accosted…taken for a ride…and murdered. Chuck (www.chuckdunawaydj.com/)

JIM MCCURDY [ex KORQ FM DJ, KTAB-TV news anchor] (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) I wouldn’t take for the experience though! I had the Jimmy Mack Show through 1971, when I moved over to TV as main news anchor, which lasted both full and part-time for 29 years when I moved into other fields including financial and estate planning, oil and gas, healthcare and banking which bring me to today. 50 years later, I’ll be retiring at the end of this year and do some consulting after that. My wife, Tia, and I plan to do some traveling around this wonderful country of ours, and actually “rolling over instead of rolling out” in the morning. It’s been a GREAT ride my friend! Best, Jim

TRIVIA ANSWER: In September 1955, Toast Of The Town‘s name changes to The Ed Sullivan Show and becomes the longest-running variety show in US history for 23 years.

JAY WALKER [CBS Radio Dallas/KJKK FM/Infinity KTSA-550/KTFM FM/Own Jay Walker Prod/Jay Walker Audio consultant 40 Plus Years In Radio] (Dallas-McKinney, TX) Subject: On my soapbox. AMEN Brother!!! To steal an old Army advertising slogan “Radio, It’s not just a job, it’s a way of life” I’ve been fascinated with radio since I was 7 years old and first started spinning the dial on the family Zenith.
