ESPN LOSES MILLIONS OF SUBSCRIBERS Walt Disney Company reveals that it loses three million subscribers of its ESPN sports network within one year. In 2014, ESPN subscribers pay an average of $6 each per month for the service. The loss of 3 million subscribers in one year removes around $216 million from Disney’s funds. Disney pays around $2 billion a year for NFL football games and will pay $1.4 billion to the NBA starting in 2016. Both of these deals raise analyst questions about whether Disney pays too much.

BEN HAROLD [ex KXOL-1360, KENR-1070] (Chattanooga, TN) Subject: Who Kills Our National Anthem? Hi Jim, I hope you (and all the subscribers) had a Happy Thanksgiving! In regards to JRRR #1465, it made me remember that when I spent time as News Director at KBUY in Fort Worth that Jack Dillon, our Operations Director, made sure the jocks DAILY played the National Anthem at 12 Noon. It was extremely patriotic. Now, maybe we should also address the issue of having a Merry Christmas, rather that just a mere Happy Holiday? Ben Harold (ex-KXOL, KBUY, KLIF, KNUZ, KENR, and way too many spots on the dial to mention)

JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ- PD/DJ] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Rundown of Wink’s Sinatra Special. Well Jim, many of today’s people, those who really care about themselves AND others, are beginning to see the light about how we better remember how we got to where we were before we were forced into where we are, we better evaluate and be thankful! You mentioned Gene Autry, I heard Wink doing a speech a few years in front of a large live audience, and he talked about what a trip it was for him to walk into KMPC one day and there was his boyhood hero, waiting to greet him! That’s about the same reaction I had when Shirley and I came down to Memphis looking for a place to live, and I walked into the office at WHBQ of my hero…he still is! JP

LESLIE WAYNE HODGES [ex KCRS-550 DJ] (Coldspring, TX) Jim, 1935 Rancher Clarence and Ruth Scharbauer put on air KRLH radio later KCRS. In maybe 1951 Wendall Mayes Senior bought KCRS 550 then May 1969 moved across the road to 1001 South Midkiff in Midland 79701 a show place show stopper of a broadcast AM radio Station facility. I have signatures from the memory book of all who came for the month of grand opening May 1969 I also have with me a ton of KCRS awards since 1932 that Clear Channel did not want to preserve in fact the KCRS 1001 South Midkiff location said to me by the then new Clear Channel Station Manager now moved to Odessa 2001 that building on Midkiff in Midland is a luxury we do not need also the reason the move to Odessa he did not feel like Odessa was getting covered by KCRS so move to Odessa where now formerly licensed to Midland KCRS now FCC licensed in the public interest to Odessa. Leslie Wayne Hodges

TRIVIA ANSWER: On November 25, 1949 Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer first appears on the music charts and becomes the musical hit of the 1949 Christmas season. Even though Gene Autry‘s version of the tune is the most popular, 80 different versions of Rudolph, the Red-Nosed Reindeer are on the scene. Nearly 20,000,000 copies are sold.

CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Blues in the Night. Mark Pollock , local musician of Cold Blue Steel passed away a few days ago. Also the writer of Secret Agent Man passed away tonight. It seems we are losing a lot of talent. I was thinking Radio One owned 97.9 in Dallas, but I must have been mistaken, since it seems to be part of the CBS cluster. I think 97.9 even knocked out K-104 in a ratings book in the past. But I maybe remembering wrong.

TRISH STRATUS (December 18, 1975 – p) We got great ratings and fan interest, and that’s what management wanted.
