ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

TELEVISION PIONEER’S LIFE EBBS Lester Louis Brown is born on December 20, 1928 in East Chicago, IN. In 1953, when Les becomes an entertainment reporter for Variety his television mission switches to radio. When TV becomes the dominant broadcast medium his path quickly changes. Les is one of the first journalists to cover television from its early days with his New York Times reports, plus he founds and edits a cutting edge magazine about the TV industry and he produces a definitive TV book of facts. In 1981, he founds one of the first magazines that analyzes the TV industry, Channels of Communications. Brown says cable channel expansion could give too much power to cable companies. On November 4, 2013 Les Brown dies of lung cancer at 84 in his home in Larchmont, NY.

RAMSEY ON THE ROAD AGAIN In just one year after he exits WWTN FM (99.7) which is his longtime flagship station in Nashville, TN for Cromwell Sports WPRT FM (The Game 102.5), syndicated radio advice host Dave Ramsey is on the road again in Music City. On January 2, 2014 Ramsey leap frogs to Clear Channel News/Talk WLAC-1510. But, when he relocates, Brother Dave loses his live shot spot in the Nashville area because his program begins to air on delay from 5-8pm. Ramsey’s move aids WPRT FM to once again emphasize on Sports Talk. WPRT FM’s 1.0 share trails Cumulus’ WGFX FM The Zone 104.5’s 6.1 share in the October 2013 PPM ratings. This might also help WLAC-1510 in their battle against WWTN FM which it tails 4.4 to 2.3.
CLINT EASTWOOD MAKES HER DAY The former Mrs. Clint Eastwood returns to KSBW TV CH 8. Dina Eastwood meets her more famous husband Clint while she is a news anchor at the Salinas-Monterey, CA NBC affiliate. Dina, who is a KSBW TV anchor from 1991 until 1996 as Dina Ruiz, begins a two week stint as a KSBW TV 5:00 pm news anchor. KSBW TV proudly proclaims: Dina Ruiz Eastwood is co-anchoring the 5 pm news this week on KSBW Action News 8 with Dan Green! …welcome her back. In 1992 Ruiz meets Clint Eastwood while she interviews him. They later become man and wife. In October 2013 she files for divorce. Lawton Dodd, KSBW TV News Director tells TMZ that Dina will come back from time to time after the sweeps.
AAA RADIO RETURNS TO MARTHA’S VINEYARD In late 2012 after WMVY FM sells their 92.7 signal to Boston University it becomes a listener supported webcaster. Its management acquires a new signal for its radio station when Friends of MVYRadio, LLC agree to purchase WMEX FM (88.7) Edgartown, MA from Vineyard Public Radio for $450,000. WMEX FM’s current license is 250 watts at 66 meters with a Construction Permit to increase to 420 watts at 92 meters. Part of the sale agreement has MVYRadio to modify that CP to another tower site in Tisbury, MA. The station hopes to be back on the air by the Spring of 2014. WMVY FM’s AAA format returns to Martha’s Vineyard in early 2014. Since it signs-off in February 2013, WMVY loses its call letters to WMXR FM (104.3) Hartford, VT.

TRIVIA ANSWER: The original Masquerade Party TV game show runs from 1952-60 with several hosts. During the 1953 season Douglas Edwards is its host.
ROBERT TINDLE [Radio Engineering Professional] (Tyler-Lufkin, TX)Subject: One of the FCC Filings that I told you a while back I would be involved in has now been filed! Near Beaumont-Port Arthur, Texas, Univision sells Spanish contemporary “Tu Musica 105.3” KPTY. It’s a Class C2 licensed to Winnie that had a tough time back during 2008’s Hurricane Ike. The transmitter’s located west of Port Arthur and southwest of Beaumont, with Houston located 60 miles due west, along I-10. The buyer is John Walton-led Excel Media LLC, which doesn’t have any other broadcast interests. Univision’s owned the onetime KLTO Crystal Beach since 2002. It’s currently simulcasting “Tu Musica” with Deer Park-licensed KAMA-FM at 104.9 – whose signal is nicely centered in the Houston metro, and won’t be affected by losing the simulcast with KPTY. Brokers – Kalil & Company for seller Univision and Sandi Bergman of MyMediaBroker.com for buyer Excel.
GARRETT HEDLUND (September 3, 1984 – p) I grew up on a farm where we had one radio station and it was all country.
