THE LATEST NEWS FROM JIM ROSE REMEMBERS RADIO NOVEMBER 08, 2013

ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
RADIO MUST REINVENT ITSELF An article in Radio Ink tells it like it is. Saga Communications CEO Ed Christian warns: ‘If we accept the reality that we are crawling, we need to adapt what we do’. Christian maintains that ‘radio needs to rebuild its image in order to remain healthy in a slow-growth world’. Ed goes on: radio needs to focus more on its product and take care of the people who produce that product. ‘We can’t clone a plant. Our business is about our people. We need to get our product right. You can treat people with respect and make money. You can do both, even in a 2 percent world’. Listen up bankers! Consolidating radio stations into factories full of line workers, firing top talent and programmers and voice-tracking from another state kills its product and its respectability.

BRADY IS CHICAGO’S FOURTH KISS WKSC FM (Kiss FM 103.5) Chicago, IL brings in its fourth nighttime host in less than four months. Monday, November 4, 2013 is nighttime host Brady’s first evening on the air. In addition to 8:00pm-Midnight DJ duties on Kiss FM, Brady also is its new Music Director. Brady, aka Brady Broski, charges into Chicago’s Kiss FM studios from another Kiss FM in Hartford, CT, WKSS FM. Will someone please explain what Kiss FM is? Too many kisses bring a slap in the face. Brady is co-host on the WKSS FM Courtney & Kiss in the Morning show since September 2009. Of course, only a conglomerate like Clear Channel can come up with that many radio kisses but they definitely are not Hershey’s. Brady also voice-tracks CC radio shows in other locales.
RADIO PERSONALITY CELEBRATES 50 YEARS IN RADIO Steve Warren celebrates 50 years in radio which begins in 1963 on WKLO-1080 in Louisville, KY. Warren remembers WKLO and how he gets his first radio position: In those days there were two hot top 40 stations in Louisville, WKLO and WAKY. I was a WKLO guy and dreamed of working there while attending junior and senior high school. I beat their door down for several weeks before they found a summer job for me. Steve addresses his 1963 class reunion in his hometown New Albany, IN. Presently, Steve is the host and producer of the weekly Country Oldies Show on 100 radio stations in Envision’s Radio Network. Steve Warren is on seven stations in NYC, as well as program director of stations in San Antonio, Albany and Dayton.
COP FILES DEFAMATION SUIT AGAINST RADIO HOST In radio when we are on the air we have to be mighty careful what we say. Terry Meiners WHAS- Louisville, KY talk show host learns the hard way. In March 2011 Louisville Metro Police officer Sam Cromity pulls Meiners over and issues him a speeding ticket. Terry pokes fun at Cromity on his radio show because he believes the officer is confrontational during the traffic stop. He refers to the cop as Black Barney which is a reference to TV’s Barney Fife plus the black Mustang that Cromity drives. Cromity files a law suit that claims Meiners’ words on the radio are irresponsible, reckless and dangerous. The judge rules that Meiners’ words are ‘non-actionable expressions of opinion’.

WINK MARTINDALE [Legendary TV Game Show Host] (Los Angeles-Calabasas, CA) Good morning Jim…from Calabasas, CA!!! As a daily reader of your excellent web column on radio – I thought this press release outlining Envision Radio Network’s “The 100 Greatest Christmas Hits of All Time” (co-produced and hosted by yours truly) might be worthy of mention. I’ll also e-mail you the short version of the release as well. Hope all is well with you my friend. Keep up the good work. You have mentioned to me more than once that you’d like me to give you some detailed info on my career and what “I’m up to right now”. Well, this is “Step 1” in answering that request! HAPPY HOLIDAYS to you and yours. Best personal regards, Wink

ROBERT TINDLE [Radio Engineering Professional] (Tyler-Lufkin, TX) Subject: KASO AM Sale. Jim! I just noticed in the FCC records that recently the first station you worked at, KASO 1240 AM in Minden, Louisiana just sold! Wasn’t that 50 Years ago that you started your career there? HAPPY GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY in Radio Jim Rose!!! Keep that radio and television news coming for us! It is much appreciated! Thanks, Robert Anthony Tindle
RADIO GOLDEN ANNIVERSARY for me actually is 2014 because my start on KASO-1040 in Minden, LA is April 1965 with the Dave Clark Five. Enrollment in Elkins Institute of Radio is about September 1964. So next year, 2014, marks 50 years in radio. May 2014 marks the 10th year of Jim Rose Remembers Radio Web column-newsletter which begins in May 2004. On November 1, 2013 Lacy turns 9 which is very old for a large breed like Akita. On November 16, 2013 I hit the magic number 70 which makes me a senior citizen.
BUD BUSCHARDT [former Director WFAA TV CH-8, ABC satellite radio PD/host] (Dallas, TX) If you want to place a time on your almost visit with Ron (Chapman), the last Sump’n Else show aired on Friday, January 26, 1968. I will have more information on that show in a future email to you. I was the original Unit Manager for the shows and the NorthPark studio. Speaking of the WFAA-FM automation system, did you ever hear the story of what Ira and the zoo crew did with that system before KZEW hit the air? Funny broadcast story. Bud
TONY LAWRENCE [WFAA-570/KKDA-730] (D/FWArlington, TX) Don Harris, WBAP Radio for many years, passed away in Waco on October 18th. Don was 75 years of age and retired in 1994. He was a long time resident of Meridian, Texas where memorial services were held on October 26th. “I was all for Obamacare until I found out I was paying for it,” a recent letter from a young woman to Pam Kehaly, president of Anthem Blue Cross in California.
WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY’S RADIO? WHERE IS RADIO HEADED? We want to know what is on your mind. Let’s start a radio revolution.  Give us your opinion about today’s radio or whatever is on your mind at Rosekkkj@earthlink.net.
JOHN BAGWELL (Dallas, TX) Subject: Today’s radio. I remember the old days when… “you’re never more than three minutes away from music at KOZA…” Now, stations have two or three commercial blocks of up to 6 or 8 minutes of spots in row. Having your spot in the last rotation is useless and if you are the third car dealer in rotation you might as well give up on getting any decent results from your advertising buy. And don’t get me started on the spot rates! You want to me to pay how much? I only want to rent :30 of air time not own the whole station! Why would someone want to listen to music and 18 minutes of commercials, when they can listen to music without the commercials on their ipad or iphone? Just my thoughts. John Bagwell; Bagwell Marketing; Dallas, TX
TRIVIA ANSWER: On the banner at the end of Looney Tunes cartoons Porky Pig yells That’s all folks! A 1926 British cartoon Jerry The Troublesome Tyke series ends with And That’s All! In a 1929 cartoon Bosko says So long, folks! But at the end of a 1930 Warner Bros. Looney Tunes cartoon Bosko is the first to say That’s all folks! In both the Looney Tunes and Merrie Melodies series what we remember the most is Porky Pig who stutters Th-th-th-that’s all folks! Voice actor Mel Blanc’s incredible cartoon character voices virtually invent the medium. Mel’s grave marker proclaims That’s All Folks.
JO BUSSELL [KLDE FM/Mix 96.5/Metro Traffic/Clear Channel/Atlanta’s Z93 and V103] (Houston, TX) Subject: Radio station changes. My husband Troy looked up the website of KHLB in Mason (TX) and saw that it had been sold, format still country but says it has more community service, and a whole new air staff. None of the former Houston radio personalities like Barry Kay are there. ‘Delight yourself in the Lord, and He will give you the desires of your heart’ (Psalm 37:4, ESV).
EZRA POUND (October 30, 1885 to November 1, 1972) The real trouble with war (modern war) is that it gives no one a chance to kill the right people.
