BIG CHANGES AT CUMULUS Rumors persist that syndicated Conservative Talk radio hosts Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity may disappear from Cumulus radio stations over contract renewal disputes. Rush says not to worry because nothing will change on his end. Politico.com asserts that Cumulus may drop Sean Hannity from its stations, but it probably will continue to air Rush Limbaugh on virtually all of his current affiliates. Michael Savage tells listeners that he is the heir apparent to Hannity’s timeslot on Cumulus’ stations and predicted he will move to afternoons by the end of the year. Cumulus hires possible replacements for its Conservative Talk stations. Clear Channel buys WOR-710 New York City for a possible affiliate for Rush and Sean in radio market #1.

LESS CLASSICS MORE NEW COUNTRY It’s out with the old and in with the new on Classic Country KHLX FM (93.1) Sacramento, CA. In the July 2013 PPM, KHLX FM has a 1.9 share. Radio Insider reports that Ken Charles, VP/Programming of Clear Channel Sacramento registers 931Country.com, 931NewCountry.com, Country931FM.com and NewCountry931.com which indicate a taste for New Country as opposed to Classic Country on KHLX FM (93.1). KHLX FM competitor KCCL FM recently relocates from 92.1 to a stronger 101.5 signal. A move to New Country makes KHLX the third Sacramento radio station with New Country to join CBS KNCI FM (105.1) and Entravision KNTY FM (The Wolf 101.9).
BRIGHAM YOUNG STATE DOES THE RADIO SIDESTEP In January 1996 Cumulus debuts its Classic Hits The End format on KENZ FM 107.5 Salt Lake City, ID. In 2005 Cumulus moves Classic Hits KENZ FM The End to 101.9. In April 2010, it flips Classic Hits The End to 1990s Hits. But in December 2010, Cumulus revives its Adult Alternative format on 101.9. On Friday, August 16, 2013 at 12pm, Cumulus relaunches KENZ FM as Classic Hits 101.9 and picks up the syndicated Bob & Tom Show from sister Classic Rock KBER FM 101.1. KBER FM afternoon hosts Mick & Allen move their Freak Show back to mornings. KENZ FM’s new format places it in competition with Bonneville Classic Hits KRSP FM The Arrow 103.5 and Clear Channel duo Oldies KODJ FM 94.1 and Rock KAAZ FM 106.5.
FAMILY BATTLE OVER GOSPEL SONG FLIES AWAY On Thursday, August 15, 2013 the U.S. 6th Circuit Court of Appeals orders more hearings in the fight over who owns the rights and royalties to Albert Brumley Sr.’s classic ‘I’ll Fly Away’. Judge Boyce Martin says that a trial judge is wrong when he excludes two articles that quote Brumley about where he works when he writes I’ll Fly Away. Albert Brumley Sr. writes the song in the late 1920s while he picks cotton on his parent’s Oklahoma farm. He copyrights the song. In 1960, he renews the copyright. But in between those times he sells the song to Hartford Music Company. A few years later, he buys Hartford Music’s copyrights. Brumley’s children argue that they are due a share of the royalties to the song.

Listen to his top 10 hits here Rings/California Girl and the Tennessee Square, Lovin Her Was Easier (Than Anything I’ll Ever Do Again). CHUCK DUNAWAY (Houston-Katy, TX) I went to two lunch bunch gatherings in the beginning, but haven’t been in some time…My health gets in the way or I have other plans that cannot be broken. The 50’s were nice for me too. I just returned from a trip to OKC where I was videotaped stories (2 hours) for the Oklahoma Museum of History. The video and accompanying pictures will be available at the Museum in what is to be called The Chuck Dunaway collection. While there I also videoed for web site dedicated to the History of Channel 4 in OKC because I did a TV show there that was quite popular in the 50’s. I was so honored because I was born in Oklahoma. Kendall and I flew up on Saturday and back on Sunday and had time to have a brunch with Danny Williams’ widow who keeps the memory of Danny alive in Oklahoma. She was a wonderful and supportive wife for Danny and made his later years joyful. As you know Danny was a true Radio/TV legend in the Sooner state. Have a wonderful; day and keep the memories alive. Chuck

MIKE SHANNON [formerly WBAP-820/WFAA-TV] (Dallas-Mesquite, TX) Subject: Next DFW Media Lunch Bunch is Saturday, Sept 21st! We’re set for our third quarterly gathering of the year.  It’s still a month away at this point, but I just made the reservation and may as well get the word out! Same place…Humperdink’s on NW Hwy between Loop 12/Walton Walker and 35E/Stemmons. We’ll meet in the ‘atrium,’ as usual, Sept 21, between 12 noon and 3pm. Same protocol…casual, each person pays for their own, drop by/drop in/drop out as you please. No speeches, no agendas (as Larry Shannon would always say,) and we’ll toast the late Kidd Kraddick along the way.  Don’t miss it! RSVP not necessary. Mike Shannon (www.KNUS99.com)
TRIVIA ANSWER: The first television commercial airs WNBT-1490 in New York City in 1941 for Bulova wristwatches, that shows the face of a Bulova clock along with a voiceover. The ad costs only nine dollars.
ROBERT TINDLE [Radio Engineering Professional] (Tyler-Lufkin, TX) East Texas has produced many radio legends!  From Lufkin there was Murphy Martin WFAA, Bill Young KILT, Hubcap Carter KLUV, Robert B. McIntire KILT, Steve Rixx KILT-FM, David Anderson KOKE-FM, Butch Brady KRBE and maybe others besides myself that I do not remember at the moment! Notables that worked in Lufkin at KLUF when I did were: Jerry Don Helm, Troy Langham, Harley Colt, Johnathan Hale and Clay Steely! KLUF got good enough in the late 70s to go straight to Houston or Dallas without going through KDOK in Tyler! Keep Tuned! Thanks and take care! Robert Tindle
LARRY KING [TV and radio host] (November 19, 1933 – p) I’m the worst person to be stuck with in a traffic jam.
