Dan ranks right up there with other KPRC TV anchors like the late Ron Stone, Bill Balleza, Jan Carson, Linda Lorelle, Bob Nicholas, weatherman Doug Johnson and sports anchors Ron Franklin and Craig Roberts. For four times the Associated Press names Dan O’Rourke Best TV Reporter in Texas major markets. In 2011, O’Rourke exits KPRC TV for a stint on KTSM TV NBC CH9 in El Paso, TX. IS THE TODAY SHOW A HOSTILE PLACE TO WORK? In 2011, Ann Curry joins The Today Show as co-host. For a year Ann co-anchors the floundering morning TV show beside Matt Lauer, until her ouster on June 28, 2012. JRRR uncovers a rash of behind the scenes harsh behavior. A staff member confesses: In the past, [former ‘Today’ host Katie] Couric would sometimes tease her about her clothes. One staff member recalls that a lot of time in the control room was spent making fun of Ann’s outfit choices or just generally messing with her. Perhaps, being pushed out of Today’s lion’s den is probably the best thing that can happen to Curry. The New York Times publishes a piece by Matt Lauer’s arch nemesis, Brian Stelter, titled Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV.

CONNELL MILLER (Branson, MO) Subject: My wire recorder… Hi Jim, Joan Pate-Day probably has a few younger folks scratching their heads when she mentioned wire recorders. I still have my Webcor wire recorder my dad gave me in the early 1950s. The last time I used it was at a classmate’s birthday party in 1957 when I recorded his band. The “Marksmen” was a pretty good three-piece group from our Dallas school, with two of its members going on to great careers in rock and roll – Steve Miller – guitar and vocals – was the birthday boy, with Boz Scaggs playing bass. To work, my wire recorder would need refurbishing, but I’ve often wondered if that spool of wire that’s on it still has the Marksmen rocking out on that afternoon at Steve’s house! Take care Jim, and give Lacy a pat on the head for me… Connell

DAVE MICHAELS (Dayton-Huber Heights, OH) Subject: FYI (Jim in Houston). You mentioned “Jonathon Winters” …did you know he is from Dayton, Ohio (related to the Winters’ Bank people)? Not many people do! I know you are a stickler for the details! Cousin Billy; KQRO, KBUC, KONO, WONE, WTUE, WHIO

Our beloved friend, Don Couser, passed away last night. I spoke with his friend, Carl Wigglesworth, who said that Don passed at 1:00 a.m. today. There will be no public memorial ceremony. Please remember Don and his children in your prayers. John Hale; McKinney, Texas

DUKE GILLELAND [Bob Wills Western Swing chat board] (Belton, TX) Subject: New KTON In Temple… Jim, In ’70 we moved to Temple and I listened to WBAP & KTON night and day. 1973 was my senior year. Gaylon Christie and KTON put together a charter bus to San Antone for the Bob Wills birthday party at the Municipal Auditorium on March 6th. A bunch of us went. I always tell folks that was what I consider my “senior trip”! I always appreciated Gaylon for putting that trip together in ’73. Duke
