SPEEDO DON’T TAKE IT SLOW One of my all time favorite tunes, Speedo by R&B group The Cadillacs, is now a top 1950s Golden Oldie. Earl [Speedo] Carroll is one of the original members of 1953’s the Carnations. When they record, they change their name to The Cadillacs. In 1954, Josie Records releases their first record, Gloria, which becomes a Doo Wop Classic. Late in 1955, The Cadillacs record their biggest hit, Speedo, which lands at #3 R&B & #17 Pop. The Cadillacs also score big with Peek-a-Boo (#20-1959 R&B & #28 Pop). Both of those tunes are in my vast record collection. In 1963, Earl joins the Coasters. In 1979, Carroll leaves the Coasters and rejoins the Cadillacs to remain for the rest of his career. From 1982 to 2005, he is the janitor at Public School 87 in Manhattan. On PBS fundraising concerts, we marvel at Carroll and the Cadillacs. On Sunday, November 25, 2012 Earl [Speedo] Carroll dies at 75 of diabetes and a recent stroke.

JOANIE GREEN-GALLO (Tulsa, OK) Jim, I thought I’d pass this on to you in case you hadn’t heard. ‘Longtime Tulsa Radio Personality Passes Away – Posted by: David Peterlinz, Sad news as longtime KMOD radio personality, Phil Stone passed away Wednesday, Nov. 21. Stone made up half of the longtime morning radio duo, Phil & Brent, which recently signed off the air after twenty-five years. Phil & Brent were known for memorable characters like Roy D. Mercer, who was known for his humorous prank calls. Former show co-host and friend Mary Moore, told Tulsa’s Channel 8 that they were “good friends” and she was “deeply saddened” to learn of his passing. Moore credits Stone with her ability to “handle any situation.” She recalled a time when Stone took her to a charity dinner for his son’s school. Moore said Stone didn’t tell her she’d be the only “girl” there. Moore said Stone loved putting her in “awkward situations.” Joanie

ROBERT TINDLE (Lufkin, TX) Subject: Bill Lee O’ Daniel Clark. Henry Larocca asked me to send you the info about the passing of Bill Clark. He was born in Hemphill, Texas and worked his career in radio at Beaumont – Port Arthur, Texas. I worked with him in the 80’s at KYKR and KLVI. Wonderful person with a “satin smooth” voice! One of the best “one on one” type communicators that I have ever heard. I posted a picture of him on my Facebook page and in the “Texas Radio Hall of Fame Group”. Thanks, Send me info about your publication. Robert Tindle Rdt011tx@hotmail.com

JOHN HALE (Dallas-McKinney, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1150) November 26, 2012 [Monday] Hi Jim, It was shocking, to say the least, to learn of the divorce between Wayne Dolcefino and KTRK. I worked with Wayne at KLBJ and at KTRH, and I have no doubt he’s the finest investigative reporter ever…his awards speak to that. His investigating and reporting style can be abrasive, but that’s mostly because he’s the one totally fearless reporter I’ve ever known. People that worried about attracting his attention never seemed to get the basic idea…don’t do anything wrong, and Wayne won’t go after you. He’s much too good not to be back on the air, and if KHOU is very smart, they’ll make sure that happens sooner, rather than later. John Hale; McKinney, Texas

JOHN WALTON [Walton & Johnson Show] (Houston, TX) Yeah I started at KOMA in OKC while I was a pre-law student at OU…they sent me down to Dallas because in those days you had to get the “1st Phone” to work on the 50kw directional array…yeah sign me up. We do share quite few listeners. Our network covers mainly southern cities, but our satellite bill is the same as nationwide…we should probably consider expansion…stations are a little “stand offish” since we are quite expensive…(but worth on the bottom line).

JIM GOUGH [‘Mr. Texas’-movie actor-voice actor] (Austin-Liberty Hill, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1148) November 19, 2012 [Monday] Yep, I know about Keith (Bilbrey)…he was on WSM for a long time. Back when I was on KRLD in Dallas, I tried to do the same thing Larry has done…provide entertainment for folks over 50 years old! They wouldn’t let me and my show was cancelled after just a year! Good for Larry! Best, Jim Gough
