Merle Haggard was one of country music’s most important voices, but he also played an unexpected role in the Brooks & Dunn story. Kix Brooks later said Haggard pushed the duo to get back together after their 2010 split.

According to Brooks, Haggard questioned why they would stop while fans were still filling venues. He later repeated the message in an interview, saying the pair had something special and should not waste it. Brooks sent the clip to Ronnie Dunn, and it helped spark the reunion. Brooks & Dunn eventually returned in 2015 and went on to win CMA Vocal Duo of the Year in 2024 and 2025.

Their catalog remains a big part of the renewed interest in ’90s country. Brooks & Dunn remain one of the genre’s most enduring acts.
