HARVEY FLOODS TOM FONTAINE’S HOME Very early Sunday morning we discover that Hurricane Harvey floods former KILT FM colleague Tom Fontaine’s home in Dickinson, TX. Tom loses everything, even his two cars. Tom is unable to make it to KENR-1070. He is on a long waiting list for a rental car. We must get ourselves in gear to help Tom Fontaine get back on his feet again. Please send what you can to Tom Fontaine’s fund at https://www.youcaring.com/tomfontaine-949562/donate/general. We thank you for your help.

ROCK RADIO IN DECLINE During the 1950s, when we are kids, we have only two choices in each market for our favorite Top 40 radio station. By the 1990s, Rock radio eases from Top 40 into different segments. So, instead of two Top 40 radio stations that play Rock music, we now have 4 or 5. Rock radio divides itself into too many variants. No more double digit Top 40 ratings. In 1976, when I’m MD/DJ on Top 40 KXOL-1360 Ft. Worth, TX it flips to Country. In 1981, when I’m a DJ on Album Rock KILT FM Houston, TX, both KILTs flip to Country.

WACHS EXITS WFOM-1230 According to the Atlanta Journal Constitution’s Rodney Ho, the afternoon dynamic duo of Larry Wachs and Bob Whitfield on Dickey Broadcasting Sports Talk WFOM-1230 [The Fan 2] Atlanta, GA comes to an end. WFOM-1230 owner David Dickey searches for a new show partner for Wachs on the refurbished Regular Guys show (2:00 pm to 4:00 pm) on WFOM-1230. Dickey says he wants to build a show around Whitfield with maybe the addition of local programming to WIFN-1230 as The Fan 3.

BILL CHERRY [Realtor, In late 1950s Music ’til Dawn host on WWL-870] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Galveston, TX! Jim and Suzie- Thanks for watching my stuff. TV is very hard. I never mastered it. Talking to a lens “eye” is even harder than I would have ever imagined. I think that’s why “now ah days” people being interviewed are captured from a profile rather than looking directly into the camera. Lots of people pronounced Galveston like your dad did. I’ve not heard anyone do it in awhile, but that doesn’t mean it’s extinguished. I’ve not been “home” since we moved to Dallas almost 13 years ago. I miss it so, but like you, we have to mind our money. Boarding three animals, chancing driving our 2001 Suburban there and back, and paying for hotel and meals will be pretty darned steep. Bill

STANLEY TEATER [ex KTEM-1400] (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) Subject: Verle Freeman (BJ Adams). I worked at KTEM (1400) from early 1973 until spring 1976 when I moved into television. Yes, I remember Lynn (Woolley) well. For most of my time in Temple I believe he was working at WFAA (570) in Dallas. At one time while I was working in Austin television I seem to remember Lynn starting a one-man ad agency. In fact, unless my old mind is playing tricks on me he pitched me once. Verle was a good friend. I was operations manager and he was production director at one point. It’d be great to touch bases with him. I’ll give the email a shot. Thanks.

TRIVIA ANSWER: On October 21, 1908 the Columbia label advertises the first two-sided vinyl record on sale in an ad that runs in the Saturday Evening Post.

CHARLES GEORGE [kc5rai, ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) I like Ice Cream, there is a Mexican place with Dulces. I like best the Fresa con Crema. I find it interesting listening to Music and programming, often the way advertising is more overt/covert depending the Market. Like at 64, not ready to think about One Step Beyond. Like I never knew Perry Mason had been on the Radio. I still remember Florence Henderson being the Hostess/Emcee of the Bell Telephone Hour on TV. Not much Classical Music on Radio/TV as in the past. 73, Charles George, KC5RAI

FRANZ SCHUBERT (January 31, 1797 – November 19, 1828) Some people come into our lives, leave footprints on our hearts, and we are never the same.
