MR ROCK AND ROLL PICKS LAST GUITAR LICK Before Elvis Presley turns on audiences with his swiveling hips, Chuck Berry fires up the crowd with his loud Rock and Roll guitar and his duck walk. So inspired by Charles Edward Anderson Berry’s Classics Johnny B. Goode and Roll Over Beethoven, The Beach Boys borrow guitar licks from Berry’s Sweet Little Sixteen for their surfer anthem Surfin’ U.S.A. On Saturday, ‎March ‎18, ‎2017 Rock ‘n’ roll legend and fan favorite Chuck Berry passes away at 90 in his home west of St. Louis, MO.

HECKLER LAYS ONE ON SAVAGE When Talk radio host Michael Savage, 74-year-old host of nationally syndicated Talk radio show Savage Nation dines at Servino Ristorante in Tiburon, CA with his toy poodle Teddy, a heckler badgers him with the words weener, weener apparently hinting at Savage’s legal name, Michael Alan Weiner. As Savage heads out the door, the verbal abuse turns physical when the heckler knocks Michael Savage to the floor. The local District Attorney’s Office will decide whether to file charges.

GENTLEMAN JIM CARTER [ex KCBQ-1170/KNUS FM/WFAA-570/KONO-860/KLIF-1190/KXOL-1360] (San Antonio, TX) Jimmy boy: I worked overnights on (WFAA) 570 in 1969 under the auspices of Charlie Van. When my relief would oversleep (I forget his name) I would have to flip the switch to 820 and blew air over that monster freq. until I was relieved. Fun times… Gentleman Jim Carter Boss Jock Radio DJ (retired) San Antonio Radio Hall of Fame Inductee – 2015

CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, KILT-610, KLIF-1190, KBOX-1480] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: memory of Chuck. Chuck Berry has died as you know by now. I have several memories of Chuck. He’d come to the booking…play his set with one encore and be in his car driving out of town minutes after he left the stage…no lie it was…show up, get the money, play and be on his way to the next gig… Yes…he drove himself. No expense for a driver or limo. Much the same for David Gilmour of Pink Floyd fame. Chuck (www.chuckdunawaydj.com/)

REMEMBERING CHUCK BERRY From 1979-80, in addition to my noon-3 pm KULF-790 DJ show here in Houston, TX, Hank Moore and I host the KULF-790 Oldies show each Saturday 6 pm-midnight, plus Sundays noon-6 pm. That’s 7 days a week on the air for me but love every single minute of it. Either in late 1979 or early 1980, Hank MCs Chuck Berry’s concert in a huge Houston, TX auditorium. After his one encore, as I sit backstage, I see Chuck Berry grab a leather briefcase and rush out the back door to his car and away he goes. Not a single word to anyone. Chuck Berry has left the building. Hank says because the IRS investigates him for back taxes, he only accepts cash in a briefcase immediately after his performances. Hank says that night’s briefcase holds $10,000 in cash.

JIM SHANNON (Slota) [ex KULF-790] (Ellisville-St. Louis, MO) Subject: KULF-790. Actually Jim, during my time there, we were fairly stable with the air staff. A few people came and went. I recall only one person being fired and that was a newsman who showed up for work plastered. (And I mean plastered!) Bill Bosse was the GM during most of my time at KULF. Southern Broadcasting was the owner. Jim Shannon By the way, there is a KULF Facebook page.

JAY WEAVER [KLBK–1360 Lubbock, KPCN-730, KBUY–1540, Fort Worth] (DFW-Hurst, TX) Subject: Names. Hi, Jim – my apologizes to Mike Marshall! Also, “Thank You!” to Mike Marshall! The one thing that I never was good at was spelling. Ask my wife! She is my “spell checker” when I’m not on the computer. Interestingly and unfortunately, the computer doesn’t know the difference between “Marshall” and “Marshal”. At least, this one doesn’t and I never thought to check with my wife on this one! Thanks again for the spelling lesson Mike.

A. A. Milne (January 18, 1882 – January 31, 1956) My spelling is Wobbly. It’s good spelling but it Wobbles, and the letters get in the wrong places.
