ALAMO CITY RADIO LEGEND RECUPERATES During the 1960s everyone listens to Bruce Hathaway on McLendon Top 40 KTSA-550 in San Antonio, TX. Bruce also has the popular TV teen dance show Swingtime. We recognize the tall radio icon in his black attire, jet black hair, along with his Abraham Lincoln beard. He moves to Magic 105 and finally KONO-860. On Saturdays 9-11 am we hear Bruce and Gary DeLaune on Star KYTY-810. We request prayers for the 78 year old Bruce Hathaway as he recovers from back surgery.
RADIO AXE FALLS IN MOTOR CITY In August 2013, former longtime Greater Media AC WMGC FM (105.1) flips to Detroit Sports Talk 105.1, but the path is not smooth. Market vet Drew Lane, former 22 years on sister WRIF FM (101.1) exits afternoons in October 2015. Detroit Sports’ first PD Jason Dixon vacates in early 2015. His successor, Dave Shore leaves in June 2016. At noon ET Friday, July 1, 2016, Greater Media Detroit flips WMGC FM to 105.1 The Bounce Hip Hop & R&B format.
IHEARTMEDIA BITES THE DUST Out of the 1996 Telcom Law, Clear Channel rises to over 1500 radio stations. But it bites off more than it can chew. Clear Channel falls apart piece by piece down to over 850 under iHeartMedia. But its $21 billion in debt far exceeds its income that leads to restructuring talks that fall apart. The New York Post reports that iHeartMedia’s lender says it would rather see iHeartMedia go into bankruptcy than accept the company’s current offer. What does this mean for IHM’s 850 radio stations?

KEN DOWE [CEO #1 KKDA FM / EVP McLendon Corp. #1 KLIF-1190] (Dallas, TX/Santa Fe, NM) Jim, I first met him (Bill Ham) in the ‘60s. He reminded me of that during the last lengthily conversation we had some 4 or 5 years ago when he telephoned out of the blue just to say: “.. every time I came to see you, even when I was just getting started,…you treated me like a gentleman.. and like I was the most important record producer in America. I just want you to know how much that meant to all of us (then) nobodies at ZZ TOP, that you respected us and liked our music. And, always took the time to tell us that you did. You even had our songs played on KLIF/1190.” I confessed to him that I didn’t remember any of that, but it was a mighty nice compliment. I hoped it was true. Bill Ham certainly deserved and received the respect of all who knew him. To this, C.S. Lewis added: “Has this world been so kind to you that you should leave with regret? There are better things ahead than any we leave behind.” Amen. Ken

CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KILT-610, KLIF-1190] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: Bill Ham/ZZ TOP. Nice piece on Bill Ham, he was a nice, but tough, guy, and kept everything in proper perspective. I share because I know you care…Chuck (http://www.mystatesman.com/news/news/local-obituaries/longtime-zz-top-manager-bill-ham-dies-at-79/nrk5z/) / (www.chuckdunawaydj.com/)
JAY West [1960 KILT-610/KODA FM/KRIO-910] (Houston, TX) Subject: Bill Ham. Hi Jim. Was shocked to hear of the passing of Bill Ham, I knew Bill well. He used to call on the station I was PD in McAllen, Tx…back in the 60’s while he worked promotion at HW Daily record promoters. And of course his ZZ Top connection. Booked a few shows with him. — Jay West

JACK PARNELL [ex WHBQ- PD/DJ] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Memphis Musicians who died. You may have heard about it by now, but late last week and early this week, we lost 2 great musicians…Wayne Jackson, the only member of The Memphis Horns; best trumpet man ever, died. A good friend and great musician. Last night 6/28, Elvis very first guitar player Scotty Moore died at his home in Nashville. He’s been rightly credited with being the man who really knew what Elvis needed to further his early career. Jack Parnell-former WHBQ-Memphis disk jockey…many long years ago.
TRIVIA ANSWER: In the 1940s, Douglas Edwards reads a three-minute newscast to open the CBS radio show Wendy Warren and the News. Within a year, Douglas Edwards is CBS TV’s first TV anchorman.
JAY WALKER [CBS Radio Dallas/KJKK FM/Infinity KTSA-550/KTFM FM/Own Jay Walker Prod/Jay Walker Competitive Audio consultant 40 Plus Years In Radio] (Dallas-McKinney, TX) Subject: On my soapbox. When I saw KOA a small 50kw station in Denver filed for and got a translator I shook my head in disgust. First KOA has 5 FM signals in their cluster so it seems to this dumb disc jockey they might have simulcast on one of those rather than steal a translator out of a very limited pool of available frequencies. That was a simple case of theft in my opinion.
