MORNING SHOW WITH BEST RATINGS DUMPED Shortly after iHeartMedia Top 40 WWPW FM (Power 96.1) Atlanta, GA enjoys its best month ever in ratings since its launch with new format and new call letters in 2012, WWPW FM management decides to dump its Morning Show plus its hosts Scotty K and Riley Couture, along with producer Bret Mega. CUMULUS CASTS A SPELL ON KFOG FM In 1982, when KFOG FM (104.5) flips from mushy E-Z Listening to rousing free-form album Rock tunes it takes on KMPX FM and KSAN FM. But lately, its numbers dwindle. On Thursday morning, March 31, 2016 World Class Rock KFOG FM, one of the last San Francisco free-form music radio venues, guts its on-air staff before its flip to a new format on April 20. Maybe KFOG FM’s 11 minute ad stop-sets does them in. On Thursday, Cumulus also whips out its dagger on sister KGO-810.
THE DAY KGO DIES On Thursday, March 31, 2016, Cumulus commits self destructive blood-letting of News-Talk KGO-810 and AAA KFOG FM (104.5). Does Cumulus give up the ship with its cost cuts? For 27 years, KGO-810 is a Bay Area powerhouse with #1 Arbitron ratings. That is until 2010 when KGO loses its lead to KCBS, KOIT FM is second and KGO falls to third. In December 2011, KGO flips to all-news, it falls further behind. In Spring 2013, KGO drops to 16th. KGO fan: It’s a total mess. Cumulus ownership is 100% to blame.
WILL CBS RADIO SPIN OFF INTO ANOTHER COMPANY? CBS Radio President Andre Fernandez brags: With an IPO, there also comes the possibility of great professional growth for our employees. Our contributions to the organization would become even more important as we build the framework for our new company, and chart our pathway to the future. That is a pretty incredible opportunity for those of you who have dedicated your careers to the business, and for the new generation of employees.

CHARLIE VAN DYKE [ex ex KLIF-1190, WLS-890, KRTH KHJ] (Paradise Valley, AZ) Subject: John Borders. Well, part of my training in ministry was a CPE series as a hospital chaplain. I ended up with a good deal of time working with folks at the end of life. One thing that I think is really important is to know that hearing is the last thing to go. We may think a person is not aware, but they still hear what you say around them. It is not unusual that a person will linger, waiting for something or someone. It is a good thing for family to tell the person they are loved, thank them for all they have done and give them permission to leave. In the case of a man, he might need to be reassured that his wife will be cared for and that his work is done. He has earned rest. Charlie

We often spent luncheons marveling at your many gifts, and justifiably proud to call you our friend… Thank Ingrid for the medical Summary on pancreatic cancer. JOHN BUTLER [ex KLIF-1190] (Dallas, TX) Hey Jim, you have the most interesting and cool radio history personally. Our station ended up moving from Minneola to Canton. We broadcast from the Old Mill Market Place on the 1st Monday Trade Day grounds. I still love AM radio, but our FM was the key to gaining the following we have and making it successful. We have over 394,000 in the listening area now from Terrell to Tyler, and a lot of people listen on line at KWJB.com and to our free KWJB phone app available from iTunes and Google Play. Local news, high school sport are big along with our own “East Texas Music Mix” with a blend of old school rock to country. It’s all a work in progress as is all of broadcasting. So, yes, radio has changed and continues to change. Always look forward to reading your newsletter; thank you for your dedication to it. I know it is a labor of love for you. All my best. – John
