ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
RADIO 1 DJ PASSES INTO THE NIGHT Mike Smith, former BBC Radio 1 Breakfast Show DJ, dies at 59 after complications from major heart surgery on Friday, August 1, 2014. Between 1982 and 1988, Smith lasts six years on Radio 1. He also is a presenter on Top of the Pops plus he hosts BBC’s coverage of Live Aid. Smith’s predecessor on Radio 1′s Breakfast Show, Mike Read and Simon Mayo, pay tribute to Mike. Read says: The news is just devastating. Sarah and Mike were a wonderful couple – it is truly horrible to hear. Mike was a very affable guy, fantastically business-like. It’s a real loss and has come as quite a shock. Mike Smith’s wife of 25 years, TV presenter Sarah Greene, thanks hospital staff who treat him for their care and compassion.

SAN ANTONIO TV COVER UP An Alamo City customer shoots a cell phone video that appears to show a San Antonio restaurant that stores food in the men’s room. KENS TV CBS CH 5 describes the video as stomach-turning and brings it to the city health department. The person who records the cell phone video questions restaurant employees, who say they have storage issues and that, out of necessity we clean the restroom and we store the food. But which restaurant? KENS TV never names the restaurant in their story, nor afterquestions were raised about their failure to identify the business. KABB Fox TV reports: KENS 5 ‘Covered Up’ the story by NOT Reporting the full story, shielding the identity of the owner and the restaurant.
SCULLY RETURNS FOR 66TH SEASON Living sports broadcasting legend Vin Scully is born in The Bronx, New York City, NY on November 29, 1927. This is just two years after the launch of KFWB-980 in Los Angeles, CA which is originally owned by a group that includes Warner Brothers co-founder Sam Warner. While 86-year-old Vin Scully announces on Tuesday that he will return for another season of radio and TV broadcasting in 2015, KFWB-980 hits a foul ball when it proclaims on Friday that it will flip to mostly syndicated all-sports radio in September 2014. The CBS owned KFWB-980 switches to its current all-news format in 1968. Each new Dodger Stadium umpire crew through the end of 2015 before first pitch will salute Scully behind home plate.
SIRIUSXM NOW LEADER IN COUNTRY MUSIC? Another big revenue quarter from SiriusXM as its Q2 revenue rises 10% to $1 Billion. Radio Ink reports that SiriusXM CEO Brian McAndrews claims that they are The Leader in Country Music. SiriusXM makes that claim because they have an embedded team in Nashville, a studio presence in that city, along with recognition from Wall Street Journal which gives the Satellite company that distinction. SiriusXM points to the Wall Street Journal article Satellite Radio Shakes Up Country Star System. McAndrews says: We will be the content leader in the audio business and our listeners are willing to pay for it. Radio Ink elaborates: SiriusXM is now working on improving its PM drive status on the West Coast.

FRANK B WRIGHT (Dallas, TX & Blowing Rock, NC) Subject: Chuck Dunaway’s comments. Hi Jim, Chuck Dunaway started a thread of comments regarding the state of broadcasting and his listening enjoyment. Overall, the AM and FM bands are vast wastelands–a term coined by FCC Commissioner Newton Minnow in the mid-60′s. For me, internet radio provides the greatest listening pleasure primarily because of the format focus of the stations and lack of commercials. Speaking as a mid-60 year old, Humboldt101.com is my favorite and I pipe it through the house all day. It’s format is “today’s easy listening”. My favorite show is Studio B which is broadcast live from 8:00-11:00am (CST) M-F. It’s hard to believe but there is a real “old-time” DJ–and it’s live! What a unique concept! The show and the station have personality. I have a couple of Grace internet radios in the house and unless I want the local news, I don’t turn on the AM/FM. I agree with Chuck about Sirius/XM. I won’t be renewing. 20+ channels of rap and heavy metal, at least 15 channels of foreign stations, one channel of easy listening. I use to enjoy the classic country format, but that canned that. More vast wasteland… Frank B. Wright; Dallas, TX & Blowing Rock, NC

TRIVIA ANSWER: This Scottish group’s first four hits on Billboard’s chart give credit to AWB. The group says that the letters stand for what they feel they are, an average, white band. AWB’s biggest hit single record is Pick Up the Pieces which we spin on KXOL-1360 in Ft. Worth, TX that peaks in early 1975 at #1 with over five hundred thousand in sales.
LESLIE WAYNE HODGES [formerly KCRS-550] (Marshall, TX) Jim, from Jim Rose Remembers Radio I get news and knowledge I have never heard of from inside the fifty five radio stations I have been with since May 1970. Certainly glad that you print the free radio Press for us. Leslie Wayne Hodges
