BELOVED POP SINGER NO LONGER WITH US One of our favorite Pop singers, Eydie Gorme, is to be 85 on Friday, August 16, 2013. But Eydie passes away on Saturday, August 10, 2013 at Sunrise Hospital after a brief illness. Eydie Gorme is born Edith Garmezano on August 16, 1928 as Neil Sedaka’s cousin in New York City’s Bronx borough. In 1963, Eydie first gains fame with her biggest solo hit record, Blame It on the Bossa Nova, at #6 on Cash Box’s Pop chart. In 1954, she meets her husband singer Steve Lawrence on the set of The Tonight Show with then host Steve Allen. In 1958, Steve and Eydie have their own TV show but have to cancel after one season because the Army drafts Steve. From 1960 to 2009 Steve and Eydie record 93 albums. They gain a dozen Emmys plus two Grammys.

GOODBYE LOCAL TV ANCHOROn Thursday, August 8, 2013, Fox Television Stations CEO Jack Abernethy tells its investors: We are retiring the typical anchorman and replacing him with multi-skilled personalities and journalists to evolve the local news model. Abernethy says the financial success of local news over the last four decades makes the news business very resistant to change and innovation and stagnant in style and form. He says Fox owned TV stations will evolve in a number of ways, including replacing the traditional anchor and newscast models and using technology and social media more effectively. As an example Abernethy points out that on WWOR TV the launch of Chasing New Jersey replaces the station’s only newscast.
CALLER PULLS HOAX ON ALBANY TALK HOST How does a radio talk show host verify who a phone caller says they are? Radio Ink reports that for about a half hour on Monday afternoon, August 12, 2013 a caller on Mike Lindsley’s talk show on Townsquare ESPN WTMM FM (The Team 104.5) in Albany, NY claims to be former New York Yankee Shane Spencer. As Spencer, the caller claims that during his time as a player on the New York Yankees he dabbles in steroids. Shane learns about the interview and alerts the Michael Kay show on WEPN FM ESPN (98.7) in NYC that the caller is an imposter: I am hearing about this interview from friends, family, former teammates, and fans. I would like to set the record straight that the interview was not done with me and all the opinions were not mine.

AUGUST 16, 1977: A DATE THAT LIVES ON IN INFAMY On August 16, 1977 I’m on I-10 on my way to Houston as a DJ on KIKK FM. Scan the radio dial to see if I can pick up KIKK-650. Finally, its signal scratches into the radio. Think that I hear the announcer say that Elvis Presley has died. No! That cannot be! As I get closer to Houston the radio signal clears up more. Yes indeed Elvis Presley has died! Never will forget that day that will live on in infamy.
MARY STODDARD [‘Sam’ on KVIL FM 1964] (Dallas-Frisco, TX) Hey Jim, Know what you mean about Houston. I grew up in Eagle Lake, 60 mi. SW just off I-10 before Columbus. I live in Frisco, TX just N. of Plano City line at Preston & Hwy. 121. So Dallas is somewhere I have lunches with my broadcasting friends at least once a month. DFW Media Lunch Bunch & WFAA exes the 1st Thurs. of every month. Hope that answers your question. Great corresponding with you, Jim. All best, Mary SAM
TRIVIA ANSWER: Satellite television begins on July 10, 1962 one day after the launch of Telstar. Communications satellite Telstar sends to Europe a concert by the Mormon Tabernacle Choir at Mt. Rushmore. American viewers witness the sights of Paris, France. In 1962 The Tornados instrumental record Telstar is a hit.
JIM GOUGH [‘Mr. Texas’-movie actor-voice actor] (Austin-Liberty Hill, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1188) April 08, 2013 [Monday] It was ’86 or ’87. A guy named Bob Anderson owned KRLY and my office was in the same building on Westheimer. Channel 26 TV was on the ground floor and I produced many a spot there! I think Rod (Tanner) only did a year or so at KOUL. Guy named Bob Trask moved to Corpus to manage the station. His wife was a model and I used her in some spots as well. Jim Gough
CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) I hope you get everything to work with your column. I find that I still like listening to the Radio, actually as soon as I got my radio, I quit looking at TV as much. Why I don’t have Cable, and yet AT&T and others keep trying to push it. Like I use to go swimming but I don’t as much as I use to, and the pools that I use to are gone are boarded up. Also I never liked Bowling but liked to go with friends sometimes, those places are gone. I want to wish you the best. Charles George KC5RAI
MEL BLANC [voice of Bugs Bunny, plus others] (May 30, 1908-July 10, 1989) That’s all folks.
