RADIO TALK HOST ABRUPTLY QUITS On Thursday, February 21, 2013 often provocative Conservative talk radio host Ralph Bailey shocks listeners and staff of KNZR-1560 Bakersfield, CA when he resigns from his afternoon show without warning after nine years. Mary Lou Gunn Buckley KNZR-1560 General Manager confirms that Bailey is gone: He was a huge part of the success of the radio station. He will be hard to replace. KNZR-1560’s chief rival American General Media owner of KERN-1180 and The Californian proclaims that Bailey will indeed replace talk show host Scott Cox from 3 to 6 pm weekdays beginning on March 4, 2013. Bailey will perform his radio show in a new studio inside The Californian’s third-floor newsroom.

KBUC RADIO RETURNS TO THE ALAMO CITY The KBUC call letters have a long history in the Alamo City on several different frequencies, but its first and most famous era is Country KBUC-1310 and its then sister KBUC FM (107.5) where I’m PD/PM Drive DJ from 1968-70. Since 2005 the KBUC FM call letters are Super Tejano 102.1 Raymondville, TX for the McAllen/Brownsville market. Clear Channel will split the Rhythmic CHR KRPT FM Wild 92.5/K289BN 105.7 simulcast in San Antonio, TX when KRPT FM (92.5) Devine flips to Classic Country KBUC FM (92.5). The Rhythmic CHR format remains on K289BN FM (105.7). Sister KAJA FM (KJ97) PD Travis Moon is PD of the new KBUC FM. KAJA FM morning host Randy Carroll is the new imaging voice on KBUC FM.
GOTHAM CITY NOW HAS COUNTRY RADIO It is 17 years since NYC has a Country radio station when Country WYNY FM (103.5) flips to Pop WKTU FM in 1996. Its transmitter is on the top of the Empire State Building with studios and offices in the AT&T Building in Manhattan. In the late 1970s the original WKTU FM is Disco 92. For years the music industry begs broadcasters to build a new radio station to help promote Country music acts whose tours frequently detour NYC for theaters in New Jersey and other locations. Cumulus SVP Jan Jeffries tells us that beginning on Monday, March 4, 2013 NYC’s new Country radio station WNSH FM (NASH 94.7) hits Gotham City’s airwaves. Its first two live DJs include Kelly Ford (10 am-3 pm) and Jesse Addy (3-7 pm) will begin on March 4, 2013.
KISSIN’ COUNTRY REBRANDS AS THE BULL Clear Channel KZSN FM Wichita, KS rebrands Kissin’ 102.1 as The Bull 102.1 less than one week away from its 27th anniversary as a Country radio station. Kissin’ 102.1 debuts on Valentines Day 1986. The Bull‘s 10 days of commercial-free tunes joins many other Country radio outlets in a shift to a younger nod to an intensive variation of Country music. This move arrives about the same time as Bobby Bones’ last day on sister Wichita CHR KZCH FM [Channel 96.3] Derby, KS when he relaunches on Country radio stations in late February 2013. Bobby Bones’ new home on Wichita’s KZSN FM takes place as current morning co-host Cathy Carrier exits to join Connoisseur Media Variety Hits KIBB FM [Bob Plays Everything 97.1] Haven, KS.

JAY WEST [former KILT-610 DJ] (Houston, TX) Subject: Gene Vincent. Yo! Jim. The story of Gene Vincent this week was very interesting to me. Gene’s “Be Bop A Lula” is still my all time favorite early rock ‘n roll song of all time. I liked the story…plus told me some things I didn’t know about Gene. Did he not die at a very young age? Car wreck in England, maybe???? JAY WEST
GENE VINCENT On April 17, 1960, while riding in a taxi cab in Chippenham, Wilshire, England with other fellow Rock-n-Roll singer Eddie Cochran (Summertime Blues #8-1958) a car crashes into them and kills Eddie. Gene Vincent survives but sustains injuries. On October 12, 1971 Gene dies from an ulcer hemorrhage.
CHUCK DUNAWAY [previously KLIF-1190/KBOX-1480/WABC-770] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: Oklahoma City television and radio icon Danny Williams dies. He was quite a gambler on the golf course. I think he was addicted to the attention he got in OKC. He was huge there for years. Danny could make you feel that you were the most important person on earth. I always felt that way around him. It was just one of the reasons I went to several WKY re-unions, tributes and birthday celebrations in OKC for Danny. Ronny Kaye was instrumental in organizing many of those events. There will always be a special place in my heart for OKC and the many memories connected with Danny. We have our Paul Berlin in Houston, Ronnie Kaye in OKC and Tony Booth in Richmond. I’m sure there are many more scattered around the country. God bless them all.

ED MILLER [ex KPCN-730/KAFM FM] (Austin, TX) Subject: Morgan Choat. Jim, A contribution to your column remembering the late Morgan Choat, whom Jay Weaver reported dead in JRRR a week ago. We were just opening the door for the sorry state of country music that permeates the industry today with pounding drums and soaring electric guitar replacing the fiddle and steel sound that previously typified our beloved sound. Sorry to have played an inadvertent part in all this, and deeply indebted to Morgan Choat for pointing out the error of my ways. I tried to make amends before he died by sending him an album I recorded live at Henry’s Bar and Grill in Austin of Don Walser and some of his South Texas honky tonk regulars playing classic country songs, what Don called his Top 40 (the Top songs of 40 years ago; Don always said he played both kinds of music, country, and western). Morgan Choat was one of a kind, and while a rather harsh task-master to me, was profoundly right that we were simply paving the way for such sorry un-country music as Taylor Swift and all of contemporary Nashville’s other sadly misbegotten acts that have served only to defile the once sacred name and sound of Real Country Music. RIP, Morgan. We’ll miss your honesty and integrity.
TRIVIA ANSWER: Henry Ford’s Model T automobile revolutionizes transportation and American industry. As owner of the Ford Motor Company, Henry Ford becomes one of the most wealthy and best-known people in the world. In 1930, it takes two technicians several days to install a car radio. They must first take apart the dashboard for the receiver and a single speaker. The ceiling has to be cut open for the antenna. These early day car radios run on their own batteries not on the car battery. Holes must be cut into the floorboard to contain the radio battery. The car radio installation manual has eight complete diagrams along with 28 pages of instructions. Henry Ford says: I will build a car for the great multitude. Any customer can have a car painted any color that he wants so long as it is black. On May 26, 1927, the 15 millionth Model T rolls off the assembly line at the Ford factory in Highland Park, MI.
