Orson Welles delivers a radio broadcast from a New York studio in 1938

SANDY TURNS OUT THE LIGHTS IN NYC Many of America’s radio stations go on the air in 1928 the same year Henry Ford puts his Model A automobile on our streets. When the Telecommunications Act of 1996 arrives, legions of broadcasters scream This is the end of radio! That landmark decision means that greedy fat cats can grab radio stations by the handfuls. Bank tellers take control of radio stations and turn them into conveyor belts of the same old same old. But listen up! Terrestrial radio is still in its infancy. Radio is where listeners turn to when in need because we’re always there. In the first week of November 2012 when hurricane Sandy turns out the lights in New York City, area residents crank up their battery-powered radios to keep up with the deadly storm’s every move. Local radio station audiences climb to their highest level. Once again, when folks want to be in the know, terrestrial radio reigns supreme as your closest friend and ally.

TRIVIA ANSWER: The Everly Brothers turn Bob Dylan down for the opportunity to be the first to record his new tune Lay Lady Lay because when they hear him sing it for them they mis-hear the lyrics. The Everlys believe that the line Lay lady lay, lay across my big breasts, babe might be a song about lesbians. So, the Everly Bothers politely decline to record Dylan’s new song.

But, Bob Dylan records his own song Lay Lady Lay and releases it in July 1969 on his Nashville Skyline album. Pete Drake plays the pedal steel guitar and Charlie Daniels plays guitar. The single lands at #8 on Billboard’s Hot 100. Over the years, Bob Dylan’s song Lay lady lay becomes a standard for numerous artists like The Byrds, Ramblin’ Jack Elliott, Melanie, The Isley Brothers, Duran Duran, Magnet and Hoyt Axton among many others. The Everlys later record Lay lady lay on their EB 84 album.
