MOUSKETEER SHEDS HER EARS During the Fabulous Fifties we kids anxiously tune in our black and white TV sets every afternoon to watch The Mickey Mouse Club kids’ variety show that features stories, songs and dance routines. It airs on ABC TV from 1955 to 1959. The very first episode introduces us to the Merry Mouseketeers. One of the Mousketeers who captures us boys’ hearts is the cute-as-a-button, dark-haired 13 year old Annette Funicello. In the 1960s, Annette teams with another teen idol Frankie Avalon for a string of fun-in-the-sun Beach Blanket movies. But in 1992 we are saddened when the love of our life Annette reveals to us that she has multiple sclerosis. On Monday, April 8, 2013 the girl next door, Annette Funicello, dies at 70 from MS at Mercy Southwest Hospital.

AL JAZEERA COMES TO AMERICA On Wednesday, January 2, 2013 former American VP Al Gore sells his struggling left-leaning Current TV channel to Qatari-based Arab TV news Al Jazeera for $500 million. In summer 2013, Al Jazeera America opens new significant Chicago Bureau cable/satellite news channel. The current smaller Al Jazeera English news bureau in the Windy City opens toward the end of 2011 with correspondent John Hendren. It expands to at least three more news staffers, including on-air reporters. Chicagoland Radio and Media reports that Chi-Town’s larger bureau is the first of 12 planned full news bureaus throughout the country for Al Jazeera America, all of which will be (in) operation well before the launch of the new network.

TURN OUT THE LITE AT KVIL In the early 1960′s; KVIL FM is one of the architects of the Adult Contemporary format. In December 2005, KVIL FM adopts 103.7 Lite FM as its new moniker. Earlier in 2013 after Tony Zazza and Julie Fisk replace Gene and Julie Gates in mornings on KVIL FM, the Highland Park-Dallas, TX radio station eases out of its 103.7 Lite-FM signature in favor of just its call letters KVIL FM. Jonathan Doll handles middays and Leigh Ann bunks down in her afternoon fortress. With its shift from Lite FM, KVIL FM’s music inches toward a brighter and recurrent format. While KVIL FM now calls itself The Best Variety Of The 90′s, 2K, and Today it ejects older tunes to sister Variety Hits KJKK FM (Jack FM 100.3) and KLUV FM Classic Hits (98.7).

ROCK STAR REVEALS ‘DANGEROUS RIDE’ Around this same time of the year in 1967 many of us Rock fans sing along with the Turtles’ #1 smash hit tune Happy Together. It sells over a half million copies. In 1999 BMI lists the Turtles’ Happy Together as one of the top 50 songs of the 20th century, with over five million radio plays. Turtles’ lead singer Howard Kaylan along with fellow Turtle Mark Volman as Flo and Eddie appear on over 100 albums by artists like Bruce Springsteen, Frank Zappa, John Lennon, the Ramones and Alice Cooper. Kaylan has a lot of stories to tell about the Rock lifestyle of sex, drugs and other excesses. In fact his new book Shell Shocked: My Life With the Turtles, Flo & Eddie and Frank Zappa is now available on Backbeat Books.

JAY WEAVER [KLBK-1340/KBUY-1540/KPCN-730] (DFW-Hurst, TX) Subject:  George Jones: Jim, I believe it was 1969 while I was at KBUY in Fort Worth that Bill and Corky Kuykendall, owners of Panther Hall Ballroom in Fort Worth, TX, took another chance and booked George Jones for a Saturday evening show. They had booked George in the past and got lucky a few times when he showed. Come Saturday night, George appears to show up to do the 30 minute Cowtown Jamboree show on KFJZ Channel 11, but his bus is parked in the rough, rocky back parking lot and George never leaves the bus. The show had to go on with the house band. Surely George will make his 8:00 “curtain call”, but George never shows up. The bus stays parked all evening into the night behind the six sided ballroom. The whole place was full of anticipation, but it faded away as the evening went on. That night was the first time I ever heard the phrase “No Show Jones”. It was a heart breaker! Forty years later, we bought front row seats to see George Jones at the beautiful Bass Hall in Fort Worth and, finally, I got to see George. He showed up and he was fantastic! This time he was a heart taker! Keep up the fantastic work, Jim and a “pat” on the head to Lacy!

This came to mind: One evening in the early 90’s, I was with a group of friends eating at a steak house in the Ft. Worth Stockyards. So was George Jones. He was in concert somewhere nearby that night. It was one of the ladies in our group’s birthday. She was a huge fan of his. One of the guys in our group shared this with Mr. Jones. Paley, who is a fan of The Adventures of Philip Marlowe detective radio mystery serial which by 1949 has the largest audience in radio, asks his programming chief, Hubell Robinson, to develop a robust Western series for radio. Creators Norman MacDonnell and John Meston come up with the western series Gunsmoke. Radio’s Gunsmoke cast includes: William Conrad (Marshal Matt Dillon), Georgia Ellis (Kitty Russell), Howard McNear (Doc Adams) and Parley Baer (Chester Wesley Proudfoot). The 30 minute radio Western serial’s 432 episodes air from April 26, 1952 to June 18, 1961. From 1955-75, Gunsmoke is a long running TV series with James Arness (Matt Dillon), Dennis Weaver (Chester Goode). Amanda Blake (Kitty Russell), Milburn Stone (Doc Adams) and Ken Curtis (Festus Haggen).

May 1 is the 67th anniversary of KWTX (1230 AM) Waco. KWTX was founded by Corsicana lawyer Beauford Jester and a group of Waco businessmen. Jester would be elected Texas governor in 1946 and again in 1948. He died in 1949; the only Texas governor to die while in office. In addition to Jester, the other owners of KWTX were: W.W. Callan, Dewitt T. Hicks, Hilton E. Howell, Robert E. Levy, Wilford W. Naman, Ross Sams and Davis Stribling. “Buddy” Bostick will celebrate his 95th birthday on May 18.
