LAST COMIC’S LAST PERFORMANCE Chattanooga, TN born comedian, Ralphie May, who rises to fame after his appearance in the first season of NBC TV’s Last Comic Standing passes away of cardiac arrest at 45 on Friday night, ‎October ‎6, ‎2017. Ralphie’s representative, Stacey Pokluda, says he cancels several performances to recover from pneumonia, which troubles him for weeks. May appears at Harrah’s Las Vegas Hotel and Casino Thursday night. Pokluda says they find Ralphie May lifeless on Friday morning at a private residence in Las Vegas.

LAS VEGAS MASS MURDER MIGHT BE WORSE When we observe Las Vegas Strip mass murderer Stephen Paddock’s 58 murders plus 500 wounds, we wonder what can be worse. Sheriff Joseph Lombardo reports that Paddock also fires rounds at two jet fuel tanks in front of his 32nd floor Mandalay Bay hotel room. Now, that explosion might engulf the entire area. FBI agents report that Paddock’s bullets open two holes in one of two circular white jet fuel tanks about 1,100 feet from the Route 91 Harvest country music festival concert site.

IS AT&T-TIME WARNER MERGER END OF ROAD FOR JEFF ZUCKER? Vanity Fair reports the AT&T Time Warner $85 billion merger makes AT&T America’s largest media company, that combines its distribution infrastructure with prestigious properties from HBO to TBS to Warner Brothers. If the Justice Department’s antitrust division approves the deal, the big question of the day is what happens to CNN, plus, its President, Jeff Zucker? Rumors suggest that AT&T’s top brass might neutralize Zucker as part of the reorganization.

ORLANDO MAKES PHILLIPS OFFER HE CANNOT REFUSE This past June 2017, Orlando radio host for 30 years Jim Philips delays his retirement where he exits radio in January 2018, but change of plans means he is on the air fewer days, but still be around for another year. At 70, Philips teases The Philips Phile listeners on Real Radio 104.1 about his change of plans with Michael Corleone’s (Al Pacino) quote from Godfather Part III: Just when I thought I was out, they pull me back in! Jim Philips narrows his air time in 2018 one day to Monday-Thursday.

JACK PARNELL [former Program Director/DJ on WHBQ-560] (Memphis, TN) Subject: Lance Russell Jim: Another friend just died yesterday…his name is Lance Russell, and he put professional wrestling in the mainstream of sports nationwide. He was 92 years old and still extremely well-liked by all the professional wrestling. He and his “cohort” Dave Brown, would go to different places to record the matches in different cities, and the crowds crowded in. Lance and I first met in 1957 in Jackson, TN. when he was sports director at what is now WBBJ-TV, and I worked in WDXI Radio and what was then WDXI-TV He later became program director at WHBQ-TV here in Memphis, and that’s where the professional wrestling programming really got it’ start, by Lance and Dave. Back then, I worked at WHBQ Radio, with some work at WHBQ-TV. He’s the one who gave Jerry Lawler the “King of Wrestling”, and he still holds that Crown. DUANE ALLEN [Lead singer Oak Ridge Boys] (Hendersonville, TN) Jim, You have recognized what I have always worked to accomplish. There are only two things that are required to make an Oaks’ Album it has the potential to be a single or, it will make a great stage show. Songs like “Dig a Little Deeper in the Well” was not a single, But, it has been a part of our stage show for decades. Also, we don’t record “favors” for anybody, including our own members. I don’t care who wrote, published, or pitched a song to me, if it does not stack up, it does not get recorded. So many acts find two or three great songs, then they fill up with songs they wrote or own. That is taking advantage of the customer to just make a dollar. We don’t ever do that. I am happy you noticed. After 51 1/2 years, I think that is the right decision.

STANLEY TEATER [ex KTEM-1400] (Austin-Cedar Park, TX) In no particular order…. there was KTEM-1400/KPLE in Temple…KTBC-TV, KVUE-TV and KEYE-TV in Austin… WTSP-TV in Tampa/St. Pete… KNTV in San Jose., CA… WQAD-TV in the Quad Cities area of Iowa and Illinois… and WBRE-TV and WYOU-TV in Scranton, Wilkes-Barre, PA. The PA situation was unique. The owners of WYOU (the CBS affiliate) paid the owners of WBRE (the NBC affiliate) to perform certain services for them. WYOU’s owners ran sales, programming and traffic. We did everything else. Basically, almost their entire operation moved into our studios. We had two master control rooms, two news sets. I had to promote both newscasts. A humbling and challenging experience. By the way, I think I may remember you from your KTEM days. I remember a Rose, but did you use a first name other than Jim? Stan

TRIVIA ANSWER: On October 1, 1922 the first daily news program debuts on radio, The Radio Digest, which debuts on WBAY-660 (WFAN-660) in New York City.

MIKE MARSHALL [former DJ on KNOK-970, KBOX-1480, KFJZ-1270, AFN-BERLIN, WFAA-820/570, KPRC-950, KXYZ-1320, KULF-790, KQUE FM, KBME-790] (Houston, TX) Subject: WFAA. Jim, Tony Lawrence also mentioned the studios. The three control rooms were, except for the size of the room, identical. Each had the red button, which meant any one could connect to either the 570 or 820 transmitter. The engineers always wanted to do “maintenance” when I was working on Saturday afternoons. As far as I could tell it consisted of squirting Windex on the face of the VU meters and it took about two hours, which meant I had to move everything, records, carts, copy book, the log from the main control room to the production room and back again what seems like every Saturday. No other station came close to this level of periodic maintenance. Also, I’m still waiting to hear Tony’s story how he got into American Forces Radio as a draftee.
