PUMPKIN WOMAN GRABS TV REPORTER’S MIC When we reporters receive assignments to go on location we never know what to expect. In 1971 as a KBOX-1480 mobile news reporter I speed the Mustang to a murder scene inside a tiny bar in East Dallas. Inside the dark I interrogate the speakeasy’s bar tender a great big guy keeps trying to interrupt. This elephant may be the killer. So I turn and rush past the blood covered sidewalk to the mobile news unit. This guy follows after me yelling something about you radio people think you are stars. When Cheshire TV Reporter Jared Goodell attempts to interview the Keene Pumpkin Festival organizer in New Hampshire the antagonistic woman keeps trying to grab his mic, hog the camera and push him aside.
CANCER ISOLATES WINDY CITY RADIO HOST Since 2005, Megan Reed midday host on WILV FM (100.3) Chicago, IL. Megan is a Chicago radio vet with almost 12 years on WLIT FM (93.9) [1989-2001], also 3 years on WAUR FM (93.9) & WYSY FM (93.9) [1986-89]. When she consults doctors about her back pains they discover breast cancer whose tumors expand to her head. In October 2014, surgery, along with radiation treatments remove Megan from Windy City air waves. Greg Solk, Hubbard Radio SVP of Programming for WILV FM, offers a ray of sunshine: The doctors say that her prognosis is good and Megan is optimistic that she will be back on the air with all of us very soon. DAVE MICHAELS [WSAI-1360/KONO-860/KBUC FM] (Dayton-Huber Heights, OH) Jimmy: …thinking about my time in Cleveland, Ohio. I met a guy whose brother was on the Ship – The Edmonds Fitz and we had coffee and about a 90 minute talk about the Great Lakes. I too was on the Fitz; not as a employee-sailor or anything; but I had a chance to get aboard her while in Northern Ohio many years ago and at the time “She” was the largest ship on the great Lakes… today there are much larger! Did you know (maybe) that all the sailors – deck workers were from the Ohio area and between 20 and 35 years old and made very little for their work on the ship until bad weather in Nov. when she stopped carrying – Iron Ore and other metals! Lake Erie was the most dangerous, because it was shallow compared to the Larger Lakes. I don’t know Jim if you have got out of Texas in your Younger years to see OHIO and other states—but the Great lakes are very impressive. So anyway – I just wanted to tell you from a Historical point – I was on the Fitz and I still remember my 20 minutes aboard her as a guest. I wish I had a camera that day. Dave

JIM ROSE REMEMBERS In the last quarter of 1980, as a DJ on Album Rock KILT FM, Bill Young has me do a year end Top 40 Rock music countdown on KILT-610 while the rest of the KILT crew feasts in a banquet downstairs in the old building at 500 Lovett. During the middle of the music countdown, KILT-610 mid day DJ Sheila Mayhew rushes up stairs to see what this mellow fellow behind the KILT-610 mic looks like. Next year in 1981 both KILTs flip to Country. In 1991, I return to KILT FM as a New Country DJ until Clinton’s 1996 Telcom Law nixes America’s radio.
BILL INGRAM (Houston-Cleveland, TX) Sheila Mayhew is certainly one of the best female jocks ever on the air… I loved her delivery.
TRIVIA ANSWER: The Three Stooges comedy act (1930–1975) known to us all by their first names: Moe, Larry and Curly begin as Ted Healy’s Stooges. Healy says Curly’s thick, chestnut-red hair does not look funny. So, Curly shaves his head. Healy says: Boy, don’t you look girlie? Moe mishears girlie as curly and the name Curly sticks.
CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) I noticed a station from Houston, on 1560 it puts in a good signal from about an hour before sunset until a couple of hours after it gets dark. The signal then gets lost. I comes in when KTRH and the others cannot be copied. I also have been getting a station with Gospel programming from Baton Rouge on 1550, they have a very good signal most nights. I was at a Music Store asking about a certain recording I wanted to buy, the sales person goes, “You could Google that.” I start to walk away since I did not feel like saying what was on my mind. The Store Manager sees me about to walk out of the store, “Do you have a problem?” I go, “No, just plan to Google and find music I want to buy and not come back here.” I then left and caught the bus home. I save money that I would have actually spent. Charles George, KC5RAI
