ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS

CLEAR CHANNEL PLACES A BEAT ON CLASSIC ROCK For 20 years Houstonians get our Classic Rock kicks on route 93.7 The Arrow KKRW FM. We hear Classic Rock tunes that we enjoy as new songs in the 1970s. Since the 1960’s, we have great Rock radio stations like KAUM FM (96.5) and of course Album Rock KLOL FM (101.1) which Clear Channel takes down the tubes. And now another nail in the coffin when Clear Channel Classic Rock KKRW FM (93.7) becomes ghetto-ized to go after Space City market leader KBXX FM (The Box 97.9). Mara Melendez who most recently programs WMIB FM Hip Hop (The Beat 103.5) Miami, FL after she helps launch New York’s Power 105.1 is KKRW FM’s first Program Director on Houston’s newest urban radio station KQBT FM (The Beat 93.7).

WTOP TEACHES HOW TO BE A SNOW REPORTER Global warming produces some of America’s largest snow storms in the northeastern portions of our country. When Washington, DC experiences its biggest winter storm in four years, WTOP FM (103.5) welcomes audience participation in its snow coverage. WTOP says: You can be a WTOP ‘snow reporter’ by tweeting, calling or emailing to let everyone know what’s happening in your neighborhood. WTOP would like to hear your description of not only weather and road conditions. Do you have power? Have you stocked up on food and supplies? Are your kids home from school, and if so, how are you keeping them entertained? Tweet your photos to WTOPsnow. Call the WTOP Talkback line at 1-877-222-10351-877-222-1035 with 20- to 30-second reports.

WLS-890 SPORTS EXPERIMENT FAILS Toward the beginning of 2013, under former Operations Manager Drew Hayes and former Program Director Tracy Slutzkin WLS-890 begins to add much more Sports Talk to its lineup. This move is to enhance WLS-890’s ratings and revenue. But the opposite takes effect because WLS-890 loses both its 25-54 male listeners plus the advertisers who target that demographic. Sports talk fans remain with their two favorite radio stations, WSCR-670 The Score and ESPN WMVP-1000, while Conservative Talk fans hit the exit ramp when Sports Talk comes on. As WLS-890’s new Operations Manager and Program Director, Peter Bolger, takes the helm he immediately removes all of WLS-890’s new Sports programming.

TAKE A RIDE ON THE JOHNNY CASH BIKE TRAIL Johnny Cash’s daughter, Cindy Cash, invites you to take a ride on the Johnny Cash bike trail during the ground-breaking ceremony on February 27, 2010 at the $3 million Johnny Cash Trail for bikes in Folsom, CA. The trail features a Folsom Prison-like bridge. The new off-street bike trail is on an easement on the western edge of Folsom State Prison which is California’s second oldest prison. Robert Goss, city of Folsom director of parks and recreation, says that the groundbreaking ceremony begins at 3 pm at the corner of Folsom Lake Crossing and East Natoma Street. The trail’s name comes from the legendary Country singer’s 1955 song Folsom Prison Blues, January 1968 concert at the prison and the 1968 hit album At Folsom Prison.

BILL CONWAY [Former PD/OM Entercom KOIT FM San Francisco, CA] (San Diego, CA) Subject: Charlie Van, Tony Lawrence pranks. I remember “Winkie” (WFAA FM Shafer automation) well. I could rewind all tapes but the one playing at one time while resetting the time tapes and get back in (WFAA) AM studio before a 4 minute record was over. Then change the last tell during the next record. BTW what ever happened to Grady Royster? Bill Conway

CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, WKY-930, KILT-610, KLIF-1190] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: a true dog story about a dogs loyalty. Jim; Kendall we just watched the best film about a Akita dog called Hachiko which is the Japanese films title…the one we saw was the American version of a true story starring Richard Gere called Hachi. It was a two Kleenex box movie…Kendall and I cried at My Dog Skip and this was even sadder. Loved it, but had to watch a silly comedy to get our eyes dry. We watched this movie called Hachi on Netflix. Take care. Chuck

MARY STODDARD [‘Sam’ on KVIL FM 1964] (Dallas-Frisco, TX) Hi Jim, You had me laughing so hard the computer nearly fell off my lap, with your wonderful Hugh Lampman story. Hilarious. I have some great memories of this guy. I was madly in ‘love’ with Hugh for a time. Told my Mother Hugh was the closest thing Dallas would ever have to its own “Cary Grant!” About a year prior to his death, Hugh was in my NW Dallas living room (smoking his cigar) one evening and we were reminiscing about the good old days. He really got a kick out of my equating him with the smoothest film star of our day! BTW, Hugh was the only person who ever smoked in my home for thirty years. That’s how much I cared! Jim. Look what you’ve made me do! LOL I’d much rather be emailing you than working for my author, which helps pay the rent. Please continue to keep in touch! I do love hearing from you very much! Take care. XOXO, Mary “SAM”

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY’S RADIO? WHERE IS RADIO HEADED? We want to know what is on your mind. Let’s start a radio revolution.  Give us your opinion about today’s radio or whatever is on your mind at Rosekkkj@earthlink.net.

TONY WILLIAMS [WKY-930/KRLD-1080/Metro Traffic] (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: popularity contest. Have you noticed how many subscribers, who don’t mind giving an opinion, agree that the TRHOF is just a popularity or beauty contest?.  (Well, actually I would not call any beautiful)

TRIVIA ANSWER: Amos and Andy is one of the funniest and most beloved television and radio shows of all time. Two white actors, Freeman Gosden and Charles Correll, create and star in the popular Amos and Andy radio series. In 1951, Gosden and Correll as producers recreate Amos and Andy for TV with an all-black cast. Alvin Childress plays the philosophical cabdriver Amos. Spencer Williams Jr. is his friend Andy (Williams). Tim Moore is the conniving schemer George ‘Kingfish’ Stevens. Other cast members include Ernestine Wade (Sapphire Stevens ), Horace Stewart (Lightnin’) Johnny Lee (Lawyer Algonquin J. Calhoun), Amanda Randolph (Ramona Smith, Sapphire’s Mama) and Lillian Randolph, sister of Amanda, (Madame Queen).

CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Subject: Rainy Days and Mondays. I figured it rained Monday, because my mother of 83 passed away in her sleep at 5 am. She will be buried next to my father at Grove Hill Cemetery. My mother loved to read, often my father would get a book and before he got to reading it she would have already finished reading its contents like 5 Alive in Short Circuit. She was 15 when she went to college, she went to TWU for a short time but transferred to NTSU, where she met my father. Charles George KC5RAI

KAREN CARPENTER [March 2, 1950 – February 4, 1983] Rainy Days and Mondays always get me down.
