RODEO HOUSTON 2014 The Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo (RodeoHouston) is the world’s largest live rodeo, entertainment and livestock exhibition. In 1952, the 85-mile Salt Grass Trail ride is the event’s first trail ride. RodeoHouston which runs March 4th-23rd, 2013 at Reliant Stadium kicks off with the Downtown Rodeo Roundup near Houston City Hall, Downtown Rodeo parade and the World’s Championship Bar-B-Que Contest. Similar to New Orleans’s Mardi Gras and New York City’s New Year’s Eve at Times Square, this is Houston, TX’s signature event. In 2013, its attendance reaches a record high 2,506,238 people. Highlights of the 2014 Rodeo Houston lineup include: March 4: Brad Paisley, March 6: Reba McEntire, March 10: REO Speedwagon and March 23: Zac Brown Band.
CHICAGO ALTERNATIVE ROCK LP FM FLIPS TO SPORTS In September 2013, WGN.FM Chicago, IL launches as a temporary, virtual FM radio station with Tribune Broadcasting’s goal to soon purchase another local Windy City FM radio frequency as its permanent spot. The Alternative Rock radio/TV station WKQX LP (Q87.7) heard on analog TV CH 6 and FM 87.7 also simulcasts on WKQX FM (101.1). Unfortunately Tribune Broadcasting’s expected split from its newspaper and publishing divisions takes much longer and may not even be complete until summer 2014. WGN Radio replaces WKQX LP’s Alternative Rock Q87.7 with Sports Talk The Game. This leaves WGN.FM’s Alternative Rock format now only on WKQX FM (101.1).
DIRECT TV VS. THE WEATHER CHANNEL During the approach of Hurricane Ike in 2008, plus other tropical storms and hurricanes Katrina and Rita we Houstonians glue our eyes to The Weather Channel for storm developments. The Weather Channel’s on the scene reporters give us bird’s eye views of high wind and flood waters on our shores. But, on January 13, 2014 The Weather Channel goes dark on DirecTV. The Weather Channel and DirecTV are on the battle field in their dispute over subscriber license fees. However, DirecTV is in no hurry to renew The Weather Channel’s contract because it has its very own weather channel called WeatherNation. Will The Weather Channel return to DirecTV? Stay tuned.

PAT MCGOWAN [Engineer-In-Charge NCP SS-4 New Century Productions] (Chandler, AZ) Subject: KUHF. Good to hear from you Jim! I have very strong feeling that the Campus Radio (or Television) Station belongs to the students, with proper adult (ie paid staff) supervision. Who knows if without those early days at KUHF or KUHT I would have had a now close to 46 year career in this industry? I was given the KUHF Distinguished Service Award in 1968. Still have it and that still sits right up there next to the 3 NATAS National Emmy Awards in importance. Pat

TONY BRIDGE [2010 Texas Radio Hall of Fame inductee] (Fort Worth-Benbrook, TX) Subject: Marshall City Council honor. That good looking female is Christina Anderson, wife of County Judge Richard Anderson. Both Andersons are best friends. They attended TRHoF with me. She is screen writer, political activist, and mover & shaker of all things good. Have started many young men and women in radio business. A story on them by name, and of Station reunion at Ranger stadium where 175 of my people attended. Don’t remember many of my people going to Minden (LA); some in later years to KEEL & KWKH. Most headed to DFW, Houston, or other big markets. Stay Tuned. More to come. Tony B.

JERRY HEILMAN (Nacogdoches, TX) Subject: news sounders. Let’s see if I can answer all of this in one email. Something like the old KLIF or KBOX news intro would be great. We run LOCAL news twice each morning in the 7 and 8 o’clock hours. No national stuff (Fox Radio News is already taken for this market). We are already getting a ton of positive feedback on bringing local news back to this market. I remember Larry Graham showing me a perfect news sounder on a soundtrack album, but I cannot recall what album it was or the artist. It had big strings doing a high note then a low note followed by about three seconds of quick string waves. It was perfect, but finding it would be a nightmare. So many of these things were produced specifically for a radio station by their jingle company and were licensed to them for a specified length of time. Hope you and Lacy have a special Thanksgiving.

PAT MCCUTCHIN (Austin-Georgetown, TX) Jim, Jan Glenn (former KTRK TV CH 8 Talk hostess) was Miss Texas and got her TV start at KAMC (channel) 28 in Lubbock when they first went on the air. Pat
TRIVIA ANSWER: In addition to the eight-track tape player, William Lear holds more than 150 patents. Lear invents radio direction finders for planes, aids in invention of the autopilot, designs first fully automatic aircraft landing system and in 1963 William Lear introduces his most famous invention of all, the Lear Jet, which is the world’s first mass-produced, affordable business jet. Not too bad for a guy who drops out of school after the eighth grade.
CHARLES GEORGE [KC5RAI – ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Allen Newton met my parents. I had an imaginary Radio Station in my bedroom, a 4-pot, 8-input broadcast board from Broadcast Electronics, Allen sold it to me for $100. I hooked up a small transmitter that just barely could be heard out to the backyard…took the call KMAP for my imaginary FM station and KFUN for the AM station I put on the air with a kit from Radio Shack. When the board would cost more to fix I gave it to a local community station. Now I just listen to music on Spotify. I can usually find music I want there. I like a mixture of different types of music. Charles George KC5RAI
ROBERT DUVALL [why he does not receive an Emmy for ‘Lonesome Dove’] It’s political. It can be a popularity contest.
