ALL THE NEWS THAT IS NEWS
NOVEMBER 22, 1963 is a day that will live on in infamy as FDR once proclaims about December 7, 1941 when Japanese warplanes bomb the U.S. naval base in an early-morning sneak attack on Oahu Island’s Pearl Harbor. One and a half years after I graduate from the brand new Kimball high school in Dallas, TX my first full time paycheck is from the home office of Superior auto insurance company. On November 22, 1963 its tall building stands on JFK’s Presidential parade route. We stand three deep as JFK’s long black Lincoln convertible passes us by. To grab a noon time meal I enter the small Greek restaurant on the ground floor and sit in a booth that faces outside toward the street. Then, a guy slams open our front door and screams: The President has been shot! Impossible! Not in our home town!
IT’S TRUE THE PRESIDENT OF AMERICA HAS BEEN SHOT! After I finish the meal I take the elevator to the 3rd floor of Superior insurance company. Why I get off on the third floor remains a mystery to this day because my desk is on the 4th floor. As the elevator door slowly opens I see 2 or 3 secretaries on the far side of the huge office floor but all of the desks are empty. With their radio blaring out the news of the day they are crying. Indeed the President of our country has been shot! On that fateful Friday, all downtown Dallas employees go home. As I drive my brand new 1963 Dodge Polara sport coupe home, an eerie feeling makes my skin feel like lava flows beneath it. For the very first time in my life, the massive Stemmons freeway has only a couple of cars and one of them is mine.

AL GORE’S CURRENT TV IS A FLOP SO IS AL ZAZEERA TV More people sign up for Obamacare than those who watch Al Zareera TV’s new American cable channel! Evidently not everyone here in America desires the Islamist point of view. Obamacare signups and Al Zazeera TV viewer totals make GM’s Chevy Volt debacle the Car of the Year. As you may remember, in January 2013, Al Zareera TV’s financial backer, the government of Qatar, forks over a robust $500 million to line former VP Al Gore’s pockets to buy his dwindling Current TV cable channel plus A-Z gains rights to US distribution. Gore’s Current TV cable channel has very few viewers and so does Al Zareera’s new American TV channel. But I guess $500 million is mere pocket change to the oil rich Arab country of Qatar.
KASEM HAS PARKINSON’S We admire Kemal Amin [Casey] Kasem as the host of the American Top 40 countdown show, plus his countless other voice work. In 1980, radio legend Casey Kasem’s second bride’s name is Jean. In 1989, Casey buys a now $43 million house as a birthday present for his wife, Jean. One of our most beloved radio broadcasters, 81-year-old Casey Kasem, is in the hospital with advanced Parkinson’s disease. But his 59 year old wife, Jean, denies his kids (Kerri, Mike, Liberty Irene and Julie) their visiting rights. TMZ reports that Casey’s wife tells his kids if they would drop their lawsuit for a conservatorship if she were to give them the right to visit their father…a security guard would be in the general vicinity. Kasem’s children reject his wife’s unbelievable offer.

FRANK HALEY [former KLIF-1190 News, presently KKIM FM 102.9 News Director] (Albuquerque, NM) Subject: November 22, 1963. No, I was in college at Stephen F Austin didn’t work at KLIF till ’67. I watched the Oswald shooting too on TV as most of America did. Our good friend Gary de Laune was next to Ruby. I did a 1/2 hour with Gary about 2 months ago, it’ll run in a couple of weeks. My first radio job was in 1960, I was 19 years. 53 years ago, hard to imagine. Be safe, Frank
GARY DELAUNE [former KLIF-1190 newscaster/KENS TV CH 5 sportscaster] (San Antonio, TX) Subject: JFK. I was to go to the Trade Mart to join Gordon McLendon for the JFK speech…I had done the noon news…prepared the 1:00 and received a phone call on the hotline tipping me on the shots being fired. My police department contact confirmed it…at 12:36:55 (according to FBI analyst Farris Rookstool III) 1:38 deep into “I Have a Boy Friend” by the Chantels. I repeated the bulletin and information until Gordon McLendon and Joe Long arrived at KLIF studios. They told me to head for the P.D. as I had the contacts. We were able to break the story about Lee Harvey Oswald being a discharged Marine, was a marksman, lived in Russia and married a Russian woman. UPI picked up all our information. That night, Jack Ruby was bringing me sandwiches to the P.D. but couldn’t find me and saw Oswald in the line-room and began hatching his plan to avenge Jackie Kennedy. More in another post. I still have all his notes and notebooks from that experience which today looks rather archaic but still cool! So much has changed in the digital age as I sit her engineering and directing HD video for the American Heart Association convention in Dallas. Anyway, thanks for the memories and I hope your birthday was spectacular! All the best, G. Dean Daniels; Video Specialist/Director; Freeman (www.freemanco.com)
