REALITY SHOW COPTER KILLS THREE On Sunday, February 10, 2013 in a rural area of northern Los Angeles County, CA three people perish in a pre-dawn whirlybird smash up while on location filming for a new Discovery Channel reality TV show. Los Angeles County Fire dispatcher Robert Diaz reports that the chopper ploughs into the ground around 3:40 am at the popular Polsa Rosa Ranch filming location in the tiny town of Acton. The show is listed on a filming permit as an untitled military-theme TV program. Eyeworks USA, the future show’s production company, is best known for NBC TV’s The Biggest Loser. Sunday’s tragedy is just 25 miles from a similar spot in Santa Clarita where actor Vic Morrow and two children die in a copter crash in 1982 while filming Twilight Zone movie.

GOLDFINGER AT THE OSCARS Out of all of the Sean Connery James Bond flicks Goldfinger is by far my most favorite. The movie has just about everything we enjoy watching: fast cars, pretty girls everywhere, plus lots of action. And probably one of my most favorite songs is Shirley Bassey’s rendering of the movie’s title tune Goldfinger. Never have we ever heard a voice like Shirley’s that causes trees to fall and the ground to rumble and shake. Another of my favorite Bassey songs is I Who Have Nothing. We hear Shirley Bassey’s magnificent voice on three James Bond films Goldfinger (1964), Diamonds Are Forever (1971) and Moonraker (1979). Film lovers will hear Shirley Bassey sing Goldfinger once more on the The Oscars awards show on February 24, 2013 in Los Angeles, CA.
RUSS KNIGHT [The Weird Beard] In the wee hours as I write words to the next issue of JRRR, memories of great radio personalities roll across my mind since that first radio DJ position in April 1965 on KASO-1240 in Minden, LA. In the 1950s, growing up in Dallas, TX everyone listens to KLIF-1190. One of the Mighty 11-90’s most popular DJs is Russ Knight [The Weird Beard]. For Career Day at Kimball high school I sign up for Russ’ class but all of the seats are already taken. The biggest prize of them all is in 1971 when I’m a newscaster on The Weird Beard’s PM Drive DJ show on Wonderful KBOX-1480 in my home town Dallas, TX. It’s still difficult to believe that one of radio’s best personalities plus one of its nicest people Russ Knight passes away at 80 on Friday, October 12, 2012.

TOM ELLIS [Veteran WABC TV NYC & WBZ TV Boston, MA news anchor] (Boston-Cape Cod-East Sandwich, MA) Subject: BREAKING NEWS: Snow Falls on Much of the Region. You should see this mess. Trees and power lines down everywhere. We couldn’t leave the house from Friday afternoon till just before noon today. Winds up to 84mph, and heavy wet snow for almost two days weighed the trees down, so they’re lying everywhere now…along with the power and telephone and internet lines. I just got back on line late today (Monday, February 11, 2013). The ocean cut through the barrier dunes all up and down the coast, and the newspaper’s saying it might not be long before the lower Cape is cut off from the rest of us. The Governor issued a travel ban, so nothing but emergency vehicles could get on the roads. It’s not like Houston after a hurricane…but close.

JAY WEAVER [KCUL-1540, KBUY-1540, KRLD-1080] (D/FW Metroplex-Hurst, TX) Subject: Morgan Choat. It is with great sadness that I tell you that Morgan Choat has passed away at 86 years of age. I had the pleasure of working with Morgan for seven years while I was at KCUL/KBUY from 1965 to 1972. Morgan was the Chief Engineer for the station, but his first love was “on air” work doing the all night show at the station. He was doing his show when I got there and was there when I left. Kurt Meer, who owned the station, told Morgan if he would get his First Class Engineer’s License, he would guarantee him a job with the station as long as he owned it. Morgan had been at the station since he was 30 years old. He later followed Meer to KJIM, Fort Worth as Program Director and Chief Engineer for Meer. Later, he went to KXOL, Fort Worth, KYAL, McKinney and KBEC, Waxahachie. Morgan was ill for awhile and spent some time away from radio, but came back to KCLE, Cleburne. He worked for M & M Broadcasting at several of their stations, including KCLE, KFWT, Glen Rose, KHFX, and KJZA, originally Mineral Wells. His last stop was KCLE (again), but soon after he got back there, they decided to go to a Gospel format, so Morgan left radio in June of 2007 after just over 50 years in D/FW Metroplex radio! Morgan leaves behind his wife, Dorthea and his loving family.

IRA [Eye] LIPSON [former KZEW FM PD] (Dallas, TX) Subject: When Dallas Rocked. Hi…Denson Walker (WFAA radio GM) moved over to the personnel department when John Dew came in as WFAA GM. Funny to think of the WFAA-FM Shaefer automation system being high tech at the time.
WARREN G. BENNIS (March 8, 1925 – p) The (radio) factory of the future will have only two employees, a man and a dog. The man will be there to feed the dog. The dog will be there to keep the man from touching the equipment.
