Jack Blanchard’s Column<\/strong>: A <\/b>Peculiar<\/b> Talent<\/b><\/span><\/h2>\n

\"\"One of my strange abilities is this:<\/strong>
\nI can stand or sit for long periods giving no indication of being alive.<\/strong>
\nIt’s sort of a self-imposed coma.<\/strong>
\nI seem to use it when I’m thinking or bored.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I was a department store Santa Claus<\/strong>
\nI tried not to cough or blink when anybody was around.<\/strong>
\nI knew they thought I was a life size Santa doll.<\/strong>
\nOne lady had been browsing through the candy and toys at my feet.<\/strong>
\nWhen I moved a little she froze and stared at me for a long moment,<\/strong>
\nand then went back to looking at the toys.<\/strong>
\nI coughed and she did a fright dance.<\/strong><\/p>\n

Another time, in another department store,<\/strong>
\nI was waiting at the bottom of an escalator<\/strong>
\nfor Misty to return from shopping upstairs.<\/strong>
\nI was bored, and drifted into one of my catatonic states.<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was wearing jeans, cowboy boots and hat, a denim shirt,<\/strong>
\nand a leather vest that was made for me at an Indian reservation,<\/strong>
\non one of our western tours.<\/strong><\/p>\n

A lady was looking at some dresses on my right,<\/strong>
\nand happened to glance in my direction.<\/strong>
\nShe casually came over and examined me.<\/strong>
\nI knew what was up and came back to reality, but I was afraid to move.<\/strong><\/p>\n

She reached out and felt the leather of my vest between her thumb and fingers.<\/strong>
\nI guess my eyes moved in response to her familiarity.<\/strong>
\nShe seemed to go into shock and levitated a few inches straight up.<\/strong>
\nShe put her hand over her heart like Fred Sanford having the big one,<\/strong>
\nand said, “Oh, my God! You’re alive! I’m SO sorry!”<\/strong>
\nI smiled and said, “No problem.”<\/strong><\/p>\n

I was beginning to enjoy these weird episodes.<\/strong>
\nIs that sick or what?<\/strong>
\nSo, if you happen to come to my funeral, do me a favor…<\/strong>
\nPoke me a couple of times just to make sure.<\/strong><\/p>\n
