BEN HAROLD [ex KXOL-1360/KBUY-1540/WBAP-820/KENR-1070] (Knoxville, TN) Subject: Mad Lad’s passing! Hi Jim, I was devastated to hear about Reuben’s passing! He was absolutely FUN to work with and it showed on the air! I remember one night when Bill Howell locked his keys in his mobile unit. I always took my stuff and tossed it by my typewriter in the newsroom. Anyway, here comes Reuben, be-bobbin’ into the parking lot, to see where we’d gone. Remember, the door had be opened from inside on West 7th? Reuben’s record was going to run out, he wanted back into the building. So, here were two STRANGE-looking white guys and a Black fellow, TRYING to break into a KXOL mobile unit, with all the cops standing at the Clover diner, trying to figure out what was going on. What a night! Ben Harold, Knoxville, TN – KXOL, KLIF, KENR, KNUZ, and MORE!

CHUCK DUNAWAY [ex WABC-770, KLIF-1190, KBOX-1480 & KILT-610] (Houston-Katy, TX) Subject: my story. The record company (Atlantic) was throwing a party for an album release in Boston and flew me to the event. At the time Peter Wolf was just divorced from Faye Dunaway. When I was introduced to Wolf as Chuck Dunaway he got the strangest look on his face until it was told to him I was no relation to Faye. He then smiled, relaxed and shook my hand. The party was on a big boat in Boston harbor. The hit from the LP was Love Stinks…or Love Hurts…Chuck (www.chuckdunawaydj.com/)

CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM-KC5RAI] (Dallas, TX) Subject: John Geils. I see we lost John Geils of the J. Geils Band. So now will only hear him on recordings. I have mentioned your column to a couple of Broadcasters on Facebook. Not sure if they contacted you are not. The past couple of nights been getting an interesting station on 1680. They have R&B and Pop Music. They have mentions of 99.7 My FM. So checking information on Google, seems to be astation from Monroe, La. I use to sometimes het at sunset, KNOE 540 but never got them verified. I am not sure stations even send out QSL cards like in the past. One thing I am being careful my Android starting smoking and smoking is bad for a person’s health. Maybe why my email is not getting through. 73, Charles, KC5RAI

KAREN [DUCKIE] MASSEY (ex morning host on KITE-930, KXOL-1360, KBUC FM) (San Antonio, TX)Subject: Society of San Antonio Radio Broadcasters. I will and now that I am a member I will vote for you too and tell Liz Houston as well. She spoke very highly of you. I also said about Tom T Hall, “He kept playing with me leg and I didn’t even fancy him”. Now I look at things in a different light and boy! do I fancy him now. He is married to an English Girl you know. Duckie! Director of Sports Sales Baywood Hotels (www.baywoodhotels.com)

TRIVIA ANSWER: On April 5, 1948, Tom Pepperday, owner/publisher of The Journal, signs on KOB TV Albuquerque, NM as the 1st TV station between Mississippi River and West Coast.

GARY MCBRAYER [KBOX-1480 enthusiast and historian] (Ridgewood, NJ) Wow – a KGKO (1480) survey would be a rare piece of memorabilia! In case you’ve never visited it, there is an amazing website for old surveys at http://las-solanas.com/arsa/. The site has posted thousands of surveys from stations from all over the US and willingly accepts scans of old surveys. They have a nice collection from most of the great Texas Top 40 stations from the 60s and 70s, including those from my very meager KBOX (1480) and KLIF (1190) collection. Gary

JIM PALMER [Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher for 19 years] (October 15, 1945 – p) Your memorabilia becomes more significant. It does put you in a different category.
