But the news \u2013 which he heard as he was dressing for the show before 48,322 fans \u2013 that 25-year old police officer Christopher Dorman, after having been shot 7-times in the leg, chest and stomach, gave him a shout out of \u201cKenny Chesney, don\u2019t forget about me\u201d\u2014 fired the East Tennessee songwriter\/entertainer up to a whole other other level.<\/p>\n

Hitting the stage just after 9 p.m., Kenny paused after \u201cI Go Back,\u201d a song that captures the power of songs to hold life\u2019s special moments in amber, and said to the crowd, \u201cI didn\u2019t know where in the show I was going to do this\u2026 But there\u2019s a line in this song that says, \u2018When I hear, \u2018Only the good die young, it still stops me in my tracks\u2026,\u2019 and I heard that an officer here in Philadelphia who was shot seven times last night \u2013 from his hospital bed, he made a video that said, \u2018Kenny, don\u2019t forget about me.\u2019 Well, Christopher Dorman, we won\u2019t forget you\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

The crowd, which had begun cheering as they realized what Chesney was talking about, roared when he invoked the policeman\u2019s name. For them, the story was personal \u2013 and the fact that Chesney knew \u2013 and lifted this moment to honor the police officer prompted an insane response. If the internet blew up at what seemed to be his comment suggesting the officer had passed, he finished the song he was singing, the plaintive \u201cAnything But Mine,\u201d about yearning for a summer love past, and offered, \u201cChristopher Dorman, wherever you are, this is for you\u2026\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI was so caught up in the moment,\u201d Chesney said after the full-tilt set, \u201cI think the emotions got the best of me \u2013 and I wasn\u2019t as clear as I could\u2019ve been. The idea that a hero like that, with seven bullets in him, would even think about me\u2026 I heard about it right before I hit the stage, and it stopped me in my tracks. Someone whose life was on the line, and after all that bravery? As anyone in the stadium knows, I kept pausing, trying to collect my thoughts.<\/p>\n

\u201cPhiladelphia has always been one of those places where the fans are loud, the tailgating is crazy and me and the band have the time of our lives every year,\u201d continued the superstar next door. \u201cAnd when I heard the cheer they sent up when I sent our best to Officer Dorman, man, everything I\u2019ve ever thought about the people of Philadelphia was confirmed.\u201d<\/p>\n

Following his set closing \u201cShe Thinks My Tractor\u2019s Sexy,\u201d the audience erupted in spontaneous cheers of \u201cKEN-EEEEEE! Ken-EEEEEE!\u201d over and over \u2013 and a triumphant Chesney returned to the stage for a raucous \u201cDon\u2019t Happen Twice,\u201d the drums thundering and the audience throwing their arms from side to side as they sang almost louder than the band onstage.<\/p>\n

For the city, who\u2019d been listening to the man from Tennessee, promise he had been thinking about then all winter, it was a moment of total connection \u2013 and earsplitting screams.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are moments that it feels so damn good to be alive,\u201d Chesney said, \u201cTonight in Philadelphia was absolutely one of them. To honor a policeman who survived something so horrific, to be rocked so hard by all those people, to see a city so alive, that\u2019s everything about why we do this! To Philadelphia, you have a lot of heart \u2013 and it was an honor to rock with you tonight and honor one of your own!\u201d<\/p>\n
