An Understanding Heart\u00a0by Carol Kuyhendall<\/strong><\/h2>\n

I HUG my friend Lois when she opens her front door. “How are you today?” I ask realizing how powerful her honest answer could be.\u00a0 Lois has inoperable lung cancer.\u00a0“I’m okay , she smiles but her shoulders feel thin to me.\u00a0 I visit her often these days, to bring a basket of fresh peaches, a bunch of helium balloons,\u00a0or a new prescription\u00a0of pills. Today I’ve come to help\u00a0her plan her forty-third\u00a0 birthday party.\u00a0 Though she doesn’t like big-deal celebrations, she agreed to a small gathering of family and friends.\u00a0 But as we sit together at her kitchen table and paper in hand, our conversation \u00a0wanders away from party\u00a0 planning and cake flavors.\u00a0 We talk about planning the future.\u00a0“I don’t know how to plan an uncertain future.\u00a0….she confesses, and then she is crying.\u00a0 My heart aches.\u00a0 Ever since I learned about the cancer, I have\u00a0 prayed not only for her miraculous\u00a0healing, but that we, her friends would be able to meet her needs.\u00a0 Sometimes, like right now, I feel so helpless and inadequate. l\u00a0 What can I do or say to ease her hurt.”<\/p>\n

“Lois I I almost plead, “if our roles were reversed- If you were me- what would you say right now.”<\/p>\n

“Nothing” I almost plead, ” if we were miles apart\u00a0what would you say right now ? ”<\/p>\n

“Nothing,” she answers quietly. “.\u00a0 “I’d just listen.\u00a0And there in her simple response is my answer.<\/p>\n

As a friend, I can’t\u00a0 heal or change this painful situation, <\/strong><\/h3>\n
