Years ago , when I lived alone, I decided not to speak from Wednesday night in Holy Week to Easter Sunday morning. It wouldn’t be too difficult with e-mail and testing , but then it it took a little planning. Early in the week I did my grocery shopping, made phone calls and care of any tasks that required speech. I took Maundy Thursday off from work, Good Friday was a holiday. I wanted to be silent because sometimes my mouth works faster than my brain, and it’s only when I’ve finished saying something that I realize I ought to have kept it to myself. That week I wanted to take preventive measures. By keeping my mouth shut. I could be assured of not hurting or offending during those holy days. It worked. But, of – course, God had a lot more to teach me. What I considered a sacrifice became a form of worship, and into my silence. God poured a torrent of grace. I understood more deeply than ever before the meaning of Holy Week. I felt the flutter of the linen cloth when the disciple fled naked, abandoning Jesus in the Garden of Gethemane. I saw the shadow of members of the Sanhedrin rushing through the night to their secret meeting. I felt the agony of Peter, bent over in shame at his betrayal , while the cock crowed for the third time.I shivered in the chill of the sudden darkness at the foot of the Cross. I heard the waiting of the women and Mary’s soft sobs as she bent over her Son’s body. Into my silence flowed sacrifice, and I wondered if I’d ever speak again. ting of the women and Mary’s soft sobs as she bent over her Son’s body.

Into my silence flowed sacrifice, and I wondered if I’d ever speak again.
