Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton announced their divorce\u00a0after four years of marriage, but Oklahoma lawyer and former state representative, Aaron Stiles, claims that the divorce was illegal. <\/strong><\/p>\n

\"blakeshelton01\"A new\u00a0law passed in Oklahoma last November that \u201crequires a\u00a0judge to seal civil, divorce and other normally public court records if a compelling privacy interest outweighs the public\u2019s interest in the records. Under the law, the judge must make public any sealing order. That order in the Shelton-Lambert divorce isn\u2019t public, The Oklahoman reported.\u00a0Stiles\u00a0authored the law\u00a0after seeing cases in which a judge sealed divorce records to protect their friends.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey\u2019re definitely not following the law on it,\u201d Stiles said about Shelton and Lambert\u2019s divorce. \u201c\u2026The average citizen, they don\u2019t get their cases sealed. Their records are made public.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Shelton filed a divorce petition July 6 in Pottawatomie County for a divorce, and the decree officially dissolving the marriage was filed July 20. A judge sealed all legal papers in the case from the public. The only public record is an online docket that shows the case as B.T.S. vs. M.L.S., the singers\u2019 initials.<\/p>\n

\"miranda01\"Stiles isn\u2019t the only attorney to weigh in on the matter. Oklahoma City attorney Irven Box told\u00a0The Oklahoman\u00a0on Sunday, \u201cI think it was a favor done \u2026 because of their celebrity status. I\u2019m sure that every Oklahoman getting a divorce would like to have their records sealed \u2026 but they don\u2019t.\u201d\u00a0The Oklahoma Supreme Court has repeatedly cautioned judges about sealing court records.<\/p>\n

\u201cSealing a public record should be a very rare event that occurs in only the most compelling of circumstances,\u201d Justice Steven Taylor said in\u00a02013.\u00a0\u201cThe law allowing a record to be sealed is clear, concise and quite simple,\u201d Taylor wrote. \u201cThe trial court cannot avoid the Oklahoma Open Records Act by simply relying on the parties\u2019 agreement to seal the record.\u201d<\/p>\n

Attorneys for both Blake Shelton and Miranda Lambert have not responded to the accusations of illegal activity.
