WHY DOES SCOTT SHANNON QUIT WPLJ FM? The question that is on all of our minds is Why does Scott Shannon quit WPLJ? Scott Shannon grows up as an Army brat in Indianapolis, IN. While still in the Army at Fort Bragg, Scott begins his radio career on WFBS-1450 in Spring Lake, NC. Shannon’s radio path leads him to Memphis, Nashville, Atlanta, Washington D.C., Los Angeles and Tampa Bay, where he creates the Morning Zoo on WRBQ FM (Q105). On Friday, February 7, 2014 Scott Shannon bids adieu on his last day on WPLJ FM in NYC. On Thursday night, NY Yankees captain Derek Jeter sighs to his old pitching pal Mariano Rivera: It’s time to go. Yankees star Derek Jeter retires after the 2014 season. Does Scott Shannon really retire from radio?

IS SCOTT SHANNON’S NEXT MOVE WOR-710? Sean Hannity tells Radio Ink: …he’s a great all around radio genius. he is and will continue to be the voice of the Seam Hannity show. What is next for Supershan? After Scott Shannon exits WPLJ FM in NYC, he vows that he will be back on the radio again. Todd Pettengill remains host of WPLJ FM’s The Todd Show. Does Scott Shannon really retire from radio? There is a new vacancy on NY’s radio dial because after just a month after its debut on Clear Channel, WOR-710 cancels its Elliott In The Morning program. The Elliott In The Morning program remains on sister Alternative WWDC FM (DC101) Washington, DC. Is Clear Channel WOR-710 Scott Shannon’s next destination? Stay tuned to this Bat channel.

THE SUN BETTER MOVE ON Since 2004, the Chicago Sun-Times building is at 350 N. Orleans in the Windy City. The 23-story former Chicago Apparel Center building built in 1977 blasts the Chicago Sun-Times name in giant metal letters across two sides of the structure. In March 1962, Arthur Alexander’s 1961 tune You Better Move On reaches #24 in the U.S. record charts. According to building owner San Francisco-based Shorenstein Properties, the Times’ riverfront headquarters better move on because its lease ends in the fourth quarter of 2014. It’s just a matter of time for Wrapports/Sun-Times Media to either negotiate a contract for a smaller section of the 98,000 square feet of the building they now occupy, or find a new lease for headquarters in a different building.

SPORTS ILLUSTRATED SWIMSUIT ISSUE REACHES NEW HIGH Sports Illustrated’s 50th anniversary Swimsuit Issue tosses a bikini-clad lass into a new high. SI’s 50th anniversary Swimsuit Issue lifts voluptuous bikini-clad Kate Upton 34,000 feet up into the sky in a specially modified airplane that create(s) a zero gravity environment for about 30 seconds at a time. SI photographs Upton as she floats around inside the aircraft’s chamber wearing nothing but her itsy bitsy teenie weenie yellow polka dot bikini. That’s a real neat idea for a summertime tune. In fact, Brian Hyland beats us to the punch with his summer 1960 #1 hit song, Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini. Stay tuned for next year’s issue of SI with Upton in a brightly colored bikini as she runs from an active volcano.

EMAILS YES WE HAVE EMAIL

JIM PREWITT [Catfish-KNCI FM 105.1] (Sacramento, CA) Hi Jim…I know this subject goes back several weeks in Jim Rose Remembers Radio but I would like to chime in on a subject someone brought up in your email section. Today’s Radio is not worse than yesterday’s Radio! I hear a lot of people slam today’s radio. I think mainly because THEY are not in the game anymore or they’re just plain ignorant. I’ve been in radio over 40 years. I started out when companies could own just a handful of stations. I remember playing 6 minutes of spots an hour. PROGRAMMING ran Programming NOT the GM and jocks were stars in many cases. I worked and learned from the best in the 70s and yes radio was good back then. Better? That’s subjective. There are many radio stations today that are programmed very well and sound very good. As good and better than the 50s, 60s and 70s. IE No Puking DJs, or rambling DJS blabbing about nothing, Yes we have that today but all I’m saying is we still have a lot of good talent on the air (and on the beach sadly) The real problem that makes radio challenging is most of the companies now are debt ridden and answer to share holders in many cases. From that prospective, that sucks. My 2cents. Jim Prewitt (catfish) Sacramento, CA (www.JimPrewitt.com)

TONY WILLIAMS [WKY-930/KRLD-1080/Metro Traffic] (Dallas-Richardson, TX) Subject: Waltons’ Patriarch Passes. Isn’t Grandpa Walton, by definition, the actual patriarch of the Waltons? Probably Waite’s character was deemed the patriarch since (Will) Geer died during the show. Also since Waite’s character actually ran the farm, he was the real patriarch. Now John-Boy is. I watched now and then, but John-Boy got on my nerves as well as all that goodnight stuff at the end. I remember Waite in a small part in Paul Newman’s “Cool Hand Luke”. All I can remember about Spencer’s Mountain is Henry Fonda. Not enough action.

WHAT ARE YOUR THOUGHTS ABOUT TODAY’S RADIO? WHERE IS RADIO HEADED? We want to know what is on your mind. Let’s start a radio revolution. Give us your opinion about today’s radio or whatever is on your mind at Rosekkkj@earthlink.net.

PAT MCCUTCHIN (Austin-Georgetown, TX) Subject: KOKE Austin. Jim, Although I have little actual radio experience, I’m a great radio fan. As far as I can remember back, I listed to KRLD and WBAP/WFAA. When McClendon hit Dallas with top 40, I really got hooked. I found McClendon’s archives and a basement full of used gear at Texas Tech. About the summer of 1955, I had rheumatic fever and KLIF was on 24 hours a day. I had to stay in bed most of the time and it was the window to the world. Bruce Hayes was great but soon moved to LA. I also was a longtime listener of Jim Lowe on WRR. He did not talk over the music and you could seal a clean version of the songs. Pat McCutchin

TRIVIA ANSWER: Today we turn on our TV sets at any hour of the day or night with access to countless channels plus all kinds of programs. But this is not always the case. In the early days of television, the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) which is the UK’s sole public broadcaster begins with just one channel. BBC’s Toddlers’ Truce cuts its feed from 6pm to 7pm to allow parents to put their kiddos to bed. What causes the BBC to eventually abandon its so-called Toddlers’ Truce? UK Postmaster General, Charles Hill, dislikes the policy. He says it’s an example of the BBC’s paternalism toward its audience: It was the responsibility of parents, not the state, to put their children to bed at the right time. So, in 1957 the BBC abandons its Toddlers’ Truce.

FR. BOB TOMLINSON (Jacksonville-Lake Striker, TX) Hi Jim. I have many versions of ‘The Weight’ on CD or stored on my computer. I have download to my iPhone a lot of music that I play as I cruise around on my Honda motorcycle. I almost always start out the ride with the Band’s CD with ‘The Weight’ on it. Another note did you get the email I sent with the story of ship board radio from my Navy days? Bob

JAY LENO (April 28, 1950 – p) I was going to start off tonight with an Obama joke, but I don’t want to get audited by the IRS.
