What\u2019s It Like Living With A Chronic\u00a0Illness?<\/strong><\/h2>\n

People often ask me what it\u2019s like\u00a0living with a chronic illness. And by \u2018often\u2019, of course I mean never.\u00a0So, for the benefit of absolutely no one, allow me to explain.You know that feeling you get when you start to come down with something?\u00a0Your throat starts to hurt and your glands swell up. Your sinuses block and your nose starts to run. Your head hurts and you can\u2019t think clearly. Your bones ache, your body feels weak and no amount of sleep seems to make a difference.

\nWell, to the best of my admittedly limited scientific knowledge \u2014 it\u2019s ok,\u00a0Cathy is a doctor, remember?\u00a0\u2014 these are actually the body\u2019s natural defences for fighting off infection. It\u2019s your immune system switching on and kicking in to gear.And these are the symptoms I\u2019ve had 24\/7 for the last seven-and-a-half years.\u00a0Because, as I\u2019ve explained before,\u00a0my body has been fighting off an infection it can\u2019t beat\u00a0and my immune system remains permanently in the \u2018on\u2019 position.
\nThe good news is that it means I rarely get whatever bug it is that\u2019s going round. Happy days.The bad news is that I permanently feel like I have the flu. Not so good.\u00a0Of course, there are other symptoms, too, like sensitivity to light, noise, cold and heat, significant memory impairment, insomnia, chronic pain and various bodily dysfunctions not appropriate to discuss in this type of public forum.\u00a0And that\u2019s without the introduction of any number of medical treatments \u2014 and believe me,\u00a0I\u2019ve tried a few\u00a0\u2014 which inevitably make you feel worse than you did to begin with.
\nSo, in short, living with a chronic illness is a real party and that\u2019s your answer.
