It\u00a0 was two weeks after I’d undergone a quadruple bypass and valve replacement on my\u00a0 heart.\u00a0 I remembered nothing of the seven-hour surgery, but my wife Tib\u00a0 recalled every anxious second-the surgeon had warned her that at eighty-seven\u00a0 I\u00a0 might not make it.<\/span>
\nAfter some time in the recovery room I was moved to an\u00a0 intensive care unit where, wonderfully, Tib was allowed to stay with me 24 hours\u00a0 a day sleeping (or at least lying down) on the narrow bench against the\u00a0 wall.\u00a0 I don’t know how many times a night she was up, adjusting my\u00a0 blanket, bringing me a glass \u00a0of water, raising or lowering \u00a0the head\u00a0 of the bed.<\/span>
\nAt\u00a0 the end of the second week there, I had a dream.\u00a0 I seemed to be walking in\u00a0 a furiously raging stream with slippery , unstable rocks underfoot.\u00a0 Tib\u00a0 was in the stream, too, going ahead of me, feeling out the way.\u00a0 And in the\u00a0 dream she turned and called over her shoulder, “I love you.” Three little words, but\u00a0 as I woke they echoed in my ears.\u00a0 They echo still.\u00a0 Wasn’t this what\u00a0 love was all about:\u00a0 the sleepless hours, the quiet standing by, the\u00a0 walking with, one partner maintaining balance for both in turbulent\u00a0 waters.<\/span>
\nIsn’t\u00a0 it an image\u00a0, too, of Jesus’ love—-walking just ahead\u00a0 of us , guiding our steps, pointing the way.\u00a0 Help me keep my eyes on YOU,\u00a0 Lord Jesus, when the water is deep.<\/span><\/span>
\n\"\"
\nSometimes a day\u00a0 seems hard to handle…then go to the bible <\/strong><\/span>
\nread\u00a0\u00a0 Isaiah\u00a0\u00a0 40:31<\/strong><\/span>
\n” But they that\u00a0 wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength;<\/strong><\/span>
\nthey shall\u00a0 mount up with wings as eagles, they shall run, and not be weary, and they shall\u00a0 walk, and not faint.<\/strong><\/span>
\nInvest Your Time\u2014Don\u2019t\u00a0 Just Spend It<\/span><\/strong>
\n\"\"<\/p>\n

<\/strong>Ephesians 5:15-17<\/span><\/a><\/address>\n

Time is a most valuable\u00a0 commodity. Since it\u2019s irreversible and irreplaceable, we ought to give careful\u00a0 consideration to how we spend our days\u2014and even our minutes. Time is a gift from\u00a0 God. That means we are not owners but stewards and will one day be held\u00a0 accountable for how we used what was entrusted to us. According to verse 15,\u00a0 there are only two possible ways to live: wisely or foolishly.<\/span>
\nLet\u2019s first consider what is\u00a0 involved in using our time wisely. Those who realize that their days belong to\u00a0 God are careful how they live. Their goal is to understand the Lord\u2019s will and\u00a0 align their schedules and activities with His purposes. As they seek guidance\u00a0 each day through intimate fellowship with Him in the Word and prayer, their\u00a0 spiritual eyes are opened to discern which opportunities are from the Father and\u00a0 which are not a part of His plans for them.<\/span>
\nBut those who are foolish do\u00a0 not give adequate thought to the way they live. Some become unproductive and\u00a0 lazy, living for their own pleasures while missing out on God\u2019s purpose for\u00a0 their lives. However, others may be very busy and extremely successful by\u00a0 worldly standards, but if their days are occupied with activities that aren\u2019t\u00a0 God\u2019s will for them, they\u2019re wasting their time.<\/span>
\nTo make the most of your\u00a0 opportunities, begin each day with the Lord, submitting to His will and asking\u00a0 that He direct your activities. After all, none of us want to get to heaven and\u00a0 discover that even though we\u2019ve been busy spending our time,we have failed to\u00a0 invest it for eternity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\nHandling Difficult\u00a0 Circumstances<\/span><\/strong>
\nPhilippians 3:8-11<\/span><\/a>
\n\"\"The apostle Paul understood how\u00a0 to handle tough circumstances. Even while he was confined in a prison cell, he\u00a0 kept his eyes on Christ and trusted firmly in the Savior. Therefore, despite\u00a0 being in chains, he was able to celebrate the Lord\u2019s work in his life. In fact,\u00a0 the epistle he wrote from jail to the Philippians was filled with rejoicing\u00a0 (1:18; 2:18; 3:1).<\/span>
\nFocusing on Christ is neither a\u00a0 natural reaction nor an easy one. Our instinct is to dwell on the situation at\u00a0 hand, searching for solutions or stewing over the pain and difficulty. As a\u00a0 result, troubles look scary and overwhelm us with a sense of defeat.<\/span>
\nHowever, fear and defeat cannot\u00a0 live long in a heart that trusts the Lord. I\u2019m not saying you\u2019ll forget what\u00a0 you\u2019re going through, but you can choose to dwell on His provision and care\u00a0 instead. He is the Deliverer (2 Cor. 1:10). He is the Healer (Deut. 32:39). He\u00a0 is the Guide (Prov. 3:6).\u00a0 The believer who lays claim to divine promises\u00a0 discovers that God pushes back negative emotions. In their place, hope,\u00a0 confidence, and contentment take up residence (Phil. 4:11). You aren\u2019t going to\u00a0 be happy about a difficult situation, but you can be satisfied that God is in\u00a0 control and up to something good in the midst of trouble.<\/span>
\nThe Lord\u2019s principles and\u00a0 promises don\u2019t change, no matter how severe or painful the situation is. Focus\u00a0 on Christ instead of the circumstances\u2014God will comfort your heart and bring you\u00a0 safely through the trial. Then you can answer Paul\u2019s call to \u201crejoice in the\u00a0 Lord always\u201d (Phil. 4:4).<\/span><\/p>\n
