MUSIC CITY LOSES A TREASURETears fall like rain in Nashville, TN over the loss of one of its most prolific music producers, writer of Classic songs, discoverer of stars and member of the Country Music Hall of Fame when Cowboy Jack Clement dies of liver cancer at 82. Jack Clement’s legacy begins at Sun Records in Memphis when he is the first to record Jerry Lee Lewis and Roy Orbison. In Nashville, Jack desegregates Country music when he brings Charley Pride to RCA records. The former Arthur Murray dance instructor and U.S. Marine publishes George Jones’ Classic She Thinks I Still Care. There is hardly any well known recording artist that his life doesn’t touch. Jack Clement’s home studio on Belmont Boulevard is a meeting place for generations of Nashville musicians.

HUGE UPSET IN CHICAGO’S PUBLISHING WORLDChicago Tribune publishes sportswriter Dan Pompei’s final column last week. The reason? The Tribune passes a rule that states no more outside, freelance work. Pompei refuses to give up his other sources of income and chooses to bid farewell to the Tribune. AOL’s news website, Patch, sees what most call a Black Friday on August 9, 2013. Out of almost 900 of its websites, approximately 400 are shut down. As many as 500 employees nationwide hit the door. Patch operates several suburban-specific Chicago websites. Judy Keen, who is the USA Today locally-based Chicago Bureau Chief since January 2007, accepts a buyout of her contract and exits the newspaper. CONNELL MILLER [Editor-in-Chief – Nostalgia Drag World] (Rogers, AR) Yup…we moved back to Arkansas a couple months ago. I’m Editor-in-Chief of a new online drag racing magazine, Nostalgia Drag World (www.nostalgiadragworld.com/) and since our webmaster lives in the area and the Chicago-based publisher will soon be moving here, we needed to come back. My three kids and four grandkids as well as my wife’s daughter and grandson living here also had a lot to do with it. Branson was nice and, since we’re only 90 miles away, we can go back and visit occasionally. Hope you and Lacy are doing well waay down in Houston-town! Connell

DR. JEFF CUNNINGHAM (Austin-Kyle, TX) Jim, I really don’t watch much TV anymore at all. The ads that they are using, for some reason, see designed to repulse the average viewer. I am not much on all the violence on TV but it would be occasionally nice to be able to watch television and not have to turn it off when my daughter is around. I suppose that is when I quit watching for the most part. The thing that disgusts me more than anything is all of the drug ads. They make it sound sexy to be messed up on drugs and the erectile dysfunction drugs are pretty horrible. Medicine men today do whatever the drug company tells them to do and unfortunately that is largely recreational in nature. I appreciate informational TV ads, but they have gone way overboard on drugs.
CHARLES GEORGE [ex KCHU FM] (Dallas, TX) Hi, Stations can talk about how much better the music was in the good ole’ days without mention of people like: Leadbelly, Blind Lemon Jefferson, Blind Willie McTell, Willie Dixon. They will think Cream and others did the music first, unless they do research. Like who would believe students from Harvard would think of cheating on a take home exam. “You can always tell a Harvard Man but you can’t tell him much.” Charles George, KC5RAI

TRIVIA ANSWER: The Four Seasons’ hit December 1963 (Oh What A Night) originally written by Bob Gaudio as December 5th, 1933. But with a little coaxing from Frankie Valli, Gaudio rewrites the lyrics plus the melody. In 1976, December 1963 (Oh What A Night) strikes #1 in both the US and UK charts.

JERRY HEILMAN (Nacogdoches, TX) Thanks to Dave Malone, USA (ret) (KEBE/KOOI, KBOX, KAND, AFN) for providing this. AFN Wiesbaden AM Radio Transmitter Going Off the Air. AFN Europe turns off its 873 AM radio transmitter in Central Germany May 31, as part of Department of Defense’s ongoing efforts to reduce operating costs. It is one of two that serves Wiesbaden Army Airfield. AM 873 provides a mix of news, talk and political commentary. The second transmitter, 98.7 FM, broadcasts AFN The Eagle, 24/7 service of contemporary music, community information & top of the hour news. News & talk fans can listen to two Power Network Shows, Morning Newswatch, from 0600-0900 & Afternoon Newswatch from 1600-1880 weekdays on AFN 360: Internet Radio. 873 AM transmitter, off post in Weisskirchen, Germany, singled out for cost savings because of isolated location & high-cost upkeep. AFN Europe anticipates additional changes to provide American military with quality entertainment & command information, while being good stewards of taxpayer dollars.

AMBROSE BIERCE (June 24, 1842 – December 26, 1913) War is God’s way of teaching Americans geography.
