Nancy Jones says the family knew his health was fading fast, but they chose to keep it quiet as not to worry friends, fans and family.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was so proud that he kind of kept it away from everyone and just would try to do the best he could with what was going on,\u201d Jones told <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wsmv.com\/story\/22128995\/george-jones-at-peace-final-days\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">WSMV-TV<\/a> in Nashville. \u201cHe was a very, very brave man.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>George Jones was 81 years old when he died of <a href=\"http:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/george-jones-cause-of-death\/\">hypoxic respiratory failure<\/a> one week after entering the hospital with a fever and irregular blood pressure. His wife says he was never in pain. \u201cHe was alert until about six hours before he passed,\u201d she reveals. \u201cNo suffering, joking and saying, \u2018Why y\u2019all crying?\u2019 He said, \u2018I\u2019m going to heaven.\u2019 I truly believe he\u2019s there right now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jones\u2019 funeral on Thursday (May 2) is open to the public. It promises to be a celebration of his life and music as much as a chance for fans, family, friends and fellow musicians to say goodbye. The service begins at 11AM ET, and in addition to being <a href=\"http:\/\/tasteofcountry.com\/george-jones-funeral-where-to-watch\/\">aired on television<\/a> and radio, will be streamed at the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.opry.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Grand Ole Opry website<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope everyone comes out Thursday,\u201d Nancy Jones says. \u201cIt\u2019s gonna be a hallelujah time!
