George and Tammy enter the KBUC remote broadcast studio for their live on the air interview. George rushes up to my mic as if the music should stop to allow him to talk on the radio. Mention that that I have many commercials. Let’s get them out of the way so we can have plenty of time to chat. George eases over to a back chair and sits down. Tammy Wynette remains at my side. Finally, I say that in 60 seconds our radio interview will begin. He ignores me. It’s down to 30 seconds. He doesn’t budge. We are 10 seconds away. He doesn’t bat an eye. Like a charging lioness, Tammy rushes over to George, grabs him and shoves him over to my side just in time for our radio interview to begin. The highlight of the luncheon was the impromptu memorial for Don Couser. Don’s attorney, and former S.A. broadcaster, Michael Black, joined us, talked about Couser, and showed us some old photos and a dance poster of Don’s. Then I told a story about Don and asked others to share theirs. In the course of time, the band develops a mutual bond with Leonard and asks him to introduce them on stage at a concert in Jacksonville, FL. On October 20, 1977, Lynyrd Skynyrd’s chartered Convair CV-300 runs out of fuel and crashes in a forest in Gillsburg, MS. Ronnie Van Zant, Steve Gaines, Cassie Gaines, assistant road manager Dean Kilpatrick, pilot Walter McCreary and co-pilot William Gray die on impact. On September 20, 2010 Leonard Skinner, who inspires Southern Rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd, dies of Alzheimer’s at 77 at St. Catherine Manor in Riverside, FL.

JOHN HALE (McKinney, TX) Subject: Jim Rose Remembers Radio (#1191) April 19, 2013 [Friday] Jim, I got the chance this week to do something that’s probably old hat to you. I took the A-train down from Denton to Dealey Plaza to see for the first time the Sixth Floor museum at the old School Book Depository, the grassy knoll and the infamous picket fence, and to take the trolley tour of the sites related to the JFK assassination. It took me fifty years to actually visit the sites, but I could still feel the history, and the sadness over the President’s killing, despite the passage of all of those years. I remain convinced that the facts behind the assassination aren’t known, despite the Warren Report, and I still think it’s very important that someday they become known.
